'04 Civic coming due for manual transmission change. Been considering going to Amsoil synthetic 5w30 MTF. Anyone here switched over their Honda manual transmission to this oil? How's it performing? Did it do away with the slightly notchy shift to 2nd gear?

Just did my 2006 Honda Civic V-Tec Si 6 speed. It did away with the occasional bumping out of 3rd gear and grinding into 2nd. Had that problem from mile 1 to 8,000. Working flawlessly mile 8,000 to 9,000. What a difference! The Honda dealer mechanic tried to talk me out of it saying they only recommend Honda MTF and it might void my warranty. I told him it met the Honda spec and AMSOIL told me they would cover the warranty if it caused a problem. He relented and we watched him change it. He test drove it, had a shocked look on his face, and couldn't believe how much better it worked. He originally thought the synchros would need replacement. The Honda service writer is going to try it in his American made truck when he takes it to another garage! Go figure!

Thanks guys. I'll be ordering 2 quarts and give it a try.

Many thanks for your help boys :-)

Importing from UK is an alternative for me. But i will email amsoil to see if someone in sweden is retailing there products.

I received the Amsoil MTF on Monday and today I finally had the opportunity to drain the transmission.

First, the Civic drain plug isn't magnetic, which I found odd. Most are. So there was no blob of ferrous metals around the drain plug. Second, the factory fill MTF had been in there for 50K miles. Didn't look too bad coming out. Still honey colored.

Getting the new MTF into the fill was somewhat of a pain due to limited space.

So what's the result? Well, the Civic transmission is a slick unit to begin with, except for a slightly notchy 2nd gear in cold weather. It doesn't grind nor do you get ahead of the synchro it's just best described as "clunky". Today is perfect weather for that clunk. 24 degrees F. Initially I still experienced the clunk, but to a lesser degree. Probably just need to run it for a few days. But I did take it on a fast 20 minute drive on my favorite twisty. "Seat of the pants" seems to indicate even smoother shifting. And towards the end of the drive the 2nd gear clunk vanished. It did with the old MTF too once everything was heated up so it remains to be seen if it's gone for good. But overall, so far, I'm pleased.

If you remove the 'reverse sensor' located on the top of the trans, you can simply pour the new MTF from the top.

Its much easier than using the fill plug on the side of the transmission.
