Amsoil small engine,or diesel oil

That's the one OPE of mine that doesn't get ASE. The snow thrower gets GC. Although I'm rethinking my use of ASE in summer equipment in favour of XD3 15W40.

It arived today.Drained the oil,replaced with the Amsoil and a Pure One filter.Mowed for about an hour.I noticed on the bottle that ASE can be used in some automobiles.If my F 150 didn't hold 6 QTS,nad leak a little I might try it in it.What's the deal with on the bottom of the bottle "HDPD"or something like that .I notice the same lettering on a Marathon house brand oil.

Perhaps that was a bit overzealous of me, or I underconsidered how frequently the mower would get used.

I grew up having to mow 4ish acres in NW Georgia, once a week minimum. Took about 5 hours each time, sometimes twice a week, often for 30 weeks out of the year. The riding Snappers' Briggs & Strattons got Castrol GTX 20w50 changed once a year and topped up as necessary (same oil used in the 1978 Plymouth Voyager 3/4 ton van still running with 290k miles on it, but that's a different story) and they're still running strong.

So that was able to do 250ish hours on one conventional oil change - but IMO mowers would run fine on canola oil. Synthetic changed once a year would be a treat compared to how most folks run 'em.

I have a Cub Cadet with a 19hp kohler. I have been using the Amsoil small engine oil in it with oil changes every two years, about 50 hours and it comes out as clean as when it went in. Also using an Amsoil filter.

Although ACD and ASE are excellent choices, these days I am using MCT (The Motorcycle 10w30 oil) in my small engines. It's optimized/formulated for small, high-revving, air-cooled engines. Plus, it contains additional rust inhibitor for periods where the engine sits in storage unused. It also contains elevated levels of zinc/phosphorus anti-wear additives.

The only "drawback" if I can think of one, is there are no friction modifiers in MCT, as it has to be compatible with the wet-clutches used in motorcycles. ASE also has this issue. Although in practice, I am not sure it is significant - but to me, the perfect oil for these lawn engines would also have the friction modifer.

I just sent in a sample of MCT that has been used all season in my Kohler Command 15 HP engine on a 36 inch Toro walk-behind mower. I should have the results on that back by this Friday, 9 October, and will post here. The last UOA on this mower was with Mobil 1 Extended Performance 10w30.

I have read everyone's comments and finally, this is one I agree with. I also believe that Amsoil MCT 10W30 may be one of the best 30wt oils you can buy for small engines (if cost is no object). In my mind, the way to go for small engines is to design a low viscosity /high HT/HS, 30wt oil (for engines that specify a 30 wt oil). It must be expensive to make such an oil, because not too many companies market them. I have about a dozen Amsoil MCT 10W30 on "stand by" status - ready for their turn in my 15kw Generac home generator and other small engines. The only other Amsoil oil that may be better is their Amsoil Marine WCT 10W30.
