Oil for your application should also have an API "S" rating, for use in spark ignition (gas) engines. This rating will appear as SJ, SL, SM, and/or SN. An API "C" rating is for compression ignition (Diesel) engines. If an oil is both API "S" and "C" rated in combination it will be fine in your Kohler. But if your oil is <span style="text-decoration: underline">only</span> API CJ-4 rated, then it is intended only for compression ignition engines.
