Amsoil SDF-11, No ADBV?

Recently I changed the oil & filter in my 03 Mercury Gran Marquis. Normally I do this when the oil is hot, but in this case it was 24 hours after I had driven the car. To my surprise, when I removed the Amsoil SDF-11 filter, there was very little oil that came out of the filter. For those that aren’t familiar with the Fords’ modular 4.6 v8, the oil filter is mounted on the lower part of the engine, toward the front on the drivers’ side. It’s a PITA to get to. The filter mount is perpendicular to the engine. Apparently there is no ADBV on the SDF-11 or if there is one, it doesn’t work properly. In this case, the oil drained back into the engine. I’ve been using the Amsoil oil filters for 13k miles and during this time, I’ve been hearing a noise in the motor at start up. I’m not talking about lifters either. Fortunately I had a Motorcraft FL-820S OEM filter for the car. Next time I will consider the Mobil extended drain filters. No more Amsoil oil filters for me.

I'm not bashing Amsoil filters but I experienced the same start up noise on my 97 CVPI. It was a real pain in the @$$ 'cause when you pay that much for a filter you kind of want to get as much use out of it as you can and not replace it after 2k miles. If it was a cheap Supertech no problem. I ******* HATE start up tick!

Kingrob, I'm not bashing Amsoil filters either. I've used them for many years. Great combo of filtration & flow. The filter just doesn't seem to work properly in this application. The engine noise I'm hearing at start-up is a brief knocking and not a ticking sound.

Send it back, thier filters are made for them by Hastings using all the same components as Hastings uses but with media Hastings makes exclusively for Amsoil SDF models. So if problems are occuring with the quality of the components Hastings is using, Amsoil should be made away of that IMO.

I would not heisitate to drop them a line about it.

I would try a second sdf-11. All filter co. make bad filters sometimes. I have my first napa gold on my wifes car. It had major start up noise. I will try another before saying they are bad filters.

I had the same experience with the SD-11 on my 5.4L. Teeth shattering start up noise. The ADBV is not silicon and the filter is very expensive which doesn’t make sense to me.

I’ve had good luck with Purolator PureONE and the best luck with Motorcraft.

Anything that is mass produced can be defective and slip thru. They are not making these by hand and I doubt they performance test every model of oil filter on every model vehicle it would fit.

Amsoil relies on Hastings to mfg a qualtiy filter.

I've experienced the same thing on 3 liter 2000 Taurus pushrod V6 using SDF 34. If engine was not run recently, there is NO oil in the filter to speak of, even though it attaches to the front side of the engine, facing mostly up. Every time an SDF-34 is spun off, that filter is nearly empty. There's not really any startup noise, however. Does the motorcraft filter with the silicone ADBV do any better, for real? I might try it once just to see if it does.

I've actually heard this pretty often now. No horizontal filter will stay 100% full but still should have a partial charge after sitting.

Yeah I can't wait until the Donaldson designs kick in.

FWIW I don't use SDF filters.

Yes really. Motorcraft filters do work well as many others have testified. Plus they're reasonably priced.

And don't forget the big reason to use Motorcraft.

Available at Walmart...LOL
The local Walmart is next door to the Ford Dealer here, that must make them happy to see filters for sale at 1/2 of what they cost at the dealer.

AMSOIL’s commitment to producing and marketing high quality products has resulted in our continuing growth over these past thirty-plus years in business. It is even more important today, as competition has increased considerably in recent years. There are now numerous synthetic motor oils available to consumers. We are no longer unique in being the only producers of synthetic lubricants, but we remain unique in the
superior performance of the oils we make.
We also demand the highest quality and performance
from the products we market but do not actually
manufacture. For those, we search out the very best suppliers who are able to meet our standards and we partner with them to market their products alongside ours. Such is the case with the Donaldson Company, makers of the best filters available anywhere. Donaldson produces filters for many applications. They have been in this business for many years and have grown to a $1.5 billion company employing about 10,000 people. Donaldson markets filters worldwide, including oil filters, air filters, fuel filters, hydraulic filters, and coolant filters. They hold more filtration patents for land transportation, avia-tion, and industry than all other filter companies combined.

I have been told that the Donaldson Company is
very selective in who they partner with, just as we are. They are suppliers to Ford Motor Company, General Motors, Caterpillar, John Deere, Lockheed Martin, the U.S. Department of Defense, and now AMSOIL INC.
I first met with the top executives of the Donaldson Company here at our Superior, Wisconsin headquarters. We had arranged a plant tour and conference for them so we could all get acquainted and exchange ideas. I joined my son, Alan Amatuzio, Dean Alexander, and some of our other key people here at AMSOIL for these discussions.
What started with this meeting ultimately resulted
in an agreement that represented a first for the
Donaldson Company. They had partnered with a
number of OEM’s before, but AMSOIL would be the
first world class lubricant company they shared their technology and product line with, and the first company they would private label their PowerCore Filters for. There will be more exciting news coming from this partnership in future months.

AMSOIL Lubricants and Donaldson Air and Oil
Filters combine to provide the very best long term
engine and equipment protection money can buy.
Both provide extended service life and superior
performance.
And the best news is they are only available
together from AMSOIL Dealers and their accounts.
To date, we have set sales records for certain of the Donaldson filters. For instance, AMSOIL Dealers today sell more of the ELF 7349 oil filters for Dodge/Cummins 5.9 liter diesel applications than any other company in the world. If you’re not marketing these fine filters, you are missing a great opportunity.
Our purchasing department recently visited
Donaldson’s headquarters and were pleased to see
the AMSOIL name positioned with their other worldwide partners in the stockholders viewing room. They also noticed that the Action News was among other publications available for their employees in their lunch room.
This is sure to be a great partnership, and as I mentioned earlier, more exciting things are in the wind from AMSOIL that will draw on the technical expertise of the Donaldson Company. Look for more news from AMSOIL very soon.
