How many kilowatts is the genset.? If it is around 45 kw, the sump size is very large(which is good thing) I know this a different engine but we use Isuzu 6SA1T 100kw Gensets and haven't had a moments problem with 750-1000hr conventional oil changes with bypass filters. We took the heads off at 20,000 hrs, clean as could be, hone marks still in the cylinders and the injectors were like knew.
Great motor. Use a bypass filter and stick to the conventional oil. Random oil samples show oil is still decent and can be used more.
Bypass filter is the key.

The generator is a 40kw, knock on wood it has never been serviced except by us (oil/filters and some hoses), we do not run the bypass filter but since you have an Isuzu I will ask...The oil sending unit is on the lower side of the motor below the coolant overflow bottle...any idea what thread size? I want to use a 'T' but will it effect the sending unit or murphy switches?

How did you run your bypass?

Is this an indirect injection engine and what revs does it cycle between?
Is it fully loaded often and for how much of its ON time?

The oil capacity is 14 qts
Indirect???
It stays around 2k rpms and does not fluctuate at all, we did test the draw and it is running about 40 amps (on 240v) from both sides of the generator.

The generator sees as little as a hour run time to 20 hours straight, depends on time of year (hot = longer run time). Right now we have about 8000+ hours on rig running only dino and wix filters, I service oil & filter every 200 - 250 (Delo or Rotella) Air Filter gets about 500 hours and fuel filter too.

Shup1 - If it is from the engine "family" I think it is these engines are bulletproof and the following comments apply to that version

The indirect injection (pre combustion) version is/was used in many and very diverse "industrial" applications

They will survive for 20000hrs or so without a rebuild in a constant speed application and the lubricant Brand matters little. I have used a variety of lubricants in them and all perform well
When using Castrol's excellent synthetic 10w-60 we obtained a 3500hr OCI using used oil analysis and tracking many engines. We did an interim FF filter change if the engine did not have the factory by-pass filter fitted

IIRC the prime OC reason (oil condition limits) was the soot level and/or viscosity increase and never through any wear metal issues

I only used a 10w-60 synthetic due to the number of "cold" (20C oil temp) starts and the upper ambient being regularly around 50C. It was an overkill really but I was able to settle on a 3000hr OCI on a large number of engines - this was a very cost effective choice

Previously these engines were given a standard oil and filter change every 200hrs!

So any 15w40 HDEO of a conforming API Quality rating will do an excellent job unless extremes of operating temperature are encountered. With such a lubricant oil sampling at 150hr rests will establish the best OCI for your application - I suspect it will be around 2000-2500hrs

Amsoil's range no doubt includes a HDEO and it will be as good as the others you use now - Delo or Rotella

I have picked up 10 gallons of Amsoil 15W40 oil, I will be switching to it in the coming weeks. I am 40 hours from finishing up the Auto RX clean phase (200 hours) with no rinse phase and jumping right into synthetic (according to Frank).

To be honest I am interested in the longer oil changes because I am just tired of the service! We have been using the setup much heavier than in the past (due to construction) and my Oil changes have been running every 4-5 weeks (with the temp at 100+ in the summer the last thing I want to do is stand in a small building changing hot oil!)

My goal is to perform a used oil analysis at 200 / 400 / 600 / 800 / 1000 hours to see exactly how long I can go.
