Which Amsoil products are NOT prone to thickening out of grade, or at least, less prone to thickening out of grade?

I was thinking about running ASL w/ a K&N Oil Filter for 10K drains btw.
 
It depends on the engine, but the 5w30 ASL and the 0w30 TSO are the worst.

Not enough data on the AFL 5W-40, but so far looks rock steady. The 5w30 HDD looks OK as does the 15w40 and the 10w30 ATM.

What kind of vehicle and how long does it take for you to go 10k miles?

I agree with Pablo about the ATM 10w30. I ran it for 9 months/6,500 miles in a 94 altima which is a known oil abuser and it did not thicken out of grade.
 
This will be for a '05 Corolla LE(Who knows when I'll get this car anyway)!
 
10,000 miles on any of these oils should be no problem. By the way, I think a K&N oil filter is a waste of money. They offer average filtration. They're made for the higher flow rate of a modified engine with a high-flow oil pump. Any standard oil filter has a flow rate that will handle any unmodified oil pump.

My Dad said, " remember a car don't make you no money." Puttin' the cart before the horse ain't so bad though because when you finally arrive at your car you will know what is best for it.

I don't use it, but if I had an 05 Corolla, I'd run Mobil 1 5w30 or 10w30 until the warranty expired. Especially, in your area I'd be hard pressed not to run Mobil 1 10w30. Warranty won't support extended drains or oil that arent't API. That's for later.

I have a 1998 Chevrolet Prizm with the 1ZZ engine
(same as the 1998 Toyota Corolla), the 2005 has an updated engine (improved), I think the Amsoil ASL would do fine for 10,000 miles.

The 0w30 actually sheared some, the first run of 5w30 thicked but not out of grade, my current run of Amsoil 5w30 at 7,000 has not changed an iota

Do an oil analysis at 7500 miles the first time around to insure all is well with your car.
I plan to take the ASL out to 15,000 mile OCI.

As I stated - it depends on the engine. I never personally had any of my cars thicken any Amsoil motor oil, nor any of my customer's cars.

Terry says it happens all the time. I have had some professional conversations with him on this.

I have seen the used oil analysis here, so I don't doubt it happens.

The root cause, the frequency, the engines, the conditions have not been studied enough nor have answers been provided to my satisfaction.
 
Michael,

I would recommend doing a 5,000 OCI the first time around, you may want to have done a couple of oil changes on the engine before going to a 5,000 or 7,500 OCI.
 
the 5w30 asl in my 98 ford thickened out of grade also. it only stayed in grade for 24,000 miles should i worry about this.

The best Amsoil formulation in terms of shear stability and resistance to oxidative thickening that I've tested is their Series 3000, 5w30. Their regular 5w30 and 10w30 do very well for 10k-12k in most applications, but will start to thicken after that.

The Amsoil 5w30/ASL and 10w30/ATM start out at approx 12 centistokes, so they are borderline 30wt/40wt oils to begin with. This was partially done so that they meet the most stringent ACEA, A3/B4 specs for high temp/high shear viscosity. This has a very beneficial effect on reducing valvetrain and ring/cylinder wear, ie iron and chrome wear. For example, if you look at the 3MP study, you can see how much lower iron wear is with the Amsoil 5w30, compared to a competitive synthetic lube.

FWIW, in my own cars I would normally change oil when analysis shows it has thickened up by 20% from the baseline viscosity. I've seen no effect on wear rates with thickening of this magnitude....

TooSlick, what are thoughts on 5w30 Series 2000. I have in my 2000 Toyota Tundra. I was thinking of 10k oci that would be most I would go between oci. Used to 3k oci on conventional oil.

is premature and possibly inaccurate.
And of course you do not refer to the Amsoil product thickening out of grade during this test and certain TBN issues!

3MP correctly state that a more detailed analysis is required due to the "competitive synthetic lube" you refer too was being used in what some of us would refer to as "the running in period". I for one agree that this should occur before conclusive "results" are used for promotion!

I would have to say only half accurate. The higher HTHS of the Amsoil should result in lower wear in the bearings and rings/cylinder area. That is at least according to the results of a study posted by Molecule a short time ago on the effects of HTHS on wear.

On the thickening aspect, both the oils seemed to be very close on a percentage basis and if given the same amount of makeup oil then thickening on a percentage basis is a wash. It is a shame the vehicle consumed so much oil over the course of 17 oil analysis replenishments and that the entire amount of oil was effectively replaced during the year interval.

Do you get the Delvac 1 SHC or just the regular Delvac 1 in Australia?

wulimaster - firstly, my post was simply intended to highlight your points and to suggest that using the results to promote either product used in the 3MP testing programme is premature at the very least. 3MP would probably say the same thing
It is a pity that the same viscosity products were not used too of course

As for Molakule's study on HTHS (which I have not read) it is interesting to note how successful FUCHS GT1 0w-20 oil is in racing etc. It has a HTHS vis of around 2.9cSt I believe

Delvac 1 SHC 5w-40 was discontinued in OZ about 2001. It's formulation and packaging here was predicated towards Euro engines (MB, MAN, Scania, IVECO, Volvo etc)and it did not sell well.
Delvac 1 5w-40 (CI-4/SL)meets all the Euro standards required in OZ (we use a LOT of Euro engines here) and this is the only version sold here now. It is always hard to obtain from a retail source.
ExxonMobil in OZ are very poor marketers of a good product

I don't agree with this. This would imply that using heavier vicosity oil is better and that hasn't proven to be the case.

Where would the AMSOIL High Performance 10w40 fall into...it thickens out of grade or no? In your opinion....

What other synthetic oil did you have in mind at running at this interval. I've used the 0w30 with the K&N filter for 12K and it thickened a bit but NP, MPG was up and excellent wear. I can't quite understand your question as with what other synthetic oil at 10K intervals do you have in mind?
