i am under alot right now, i cannot find too much on amsoil or redline for my differential in my 86 300zx. my differential calls for gl-4 and i been looking into the redline mt-90. amsoil though is a longer lasting fluid that i seen and i may want to try that, but i want to know what can i use.

my transmission (5 speed) calls for gl-5. i want to use a good product, hehe my transmission holds 1 qt according to the book. redline or amsoil.

thanks...

Are you certain that you have your specifications correct? I believe that your vehicle uses GL-4 in the transmission and GL-5 in the rear axle. This should be specified in the owners manual.

lol sorrie ur right. there were these 2 guys on the 300zx board who got me confused.

gl4 transmission
gl5 differ.

o and i have no lsd.

thanks.

If this is an AWD it is probalby GL-5 in the rear and GL-4 in the trans and transfer case. I tried the Amsoil and switched to RedLine as the Amosil did nothing over the OEM gear oil for cold shift harshness in my 6 spd. I then tried the MT-90 with great success and ran it a year or so but I recently switched to a 50-50 mix of MT-90 and MTL which was suggested by many who drive my brand. This mix is even better for smooth shifting. This mix is in the transfer case and transmission. In the rear I use the redLine 75W90 GL-5 and it seems fine.

Redline makes a wider weight range in the GL-4 category and IMO a better gear oil for manual trans.

I would say also, the GL-4 for the transmission, and GL-5 for the diff. GL-4 ususally contains 1/2 the sulfur/phosphorus anti-wear content of a GL-5 lube. Apparently sulfur will attack yellow metals such as synchros, at high temperatures. Not considered by some to be an issue though, when using a full synthetic lube, as they don't typically run as hot as conventional petroleum lubes do.

I've got Amsoil Series 2000 75W-90 gear lube, which is rated GL-2 thru GL-5, and MT-1 in my truck transmision that calls for a GL-4 lube. I was assured it would be compatible with the yellow metals, and so far, shifting in cold weather has been great.

I've also got it installed in my rear limited slip differential, and I didn't have to add any external friction modifiers, like has to be done to conventional lubes in order for the LSD to work properly. Just my experience with the Amsoil. I'm NOT a dealer of it.

thanks guys, just the advice i needed. talk about quick responses. hehe dont you ever sleep? ok enough of that, im giong to go and give red line a try, gl5 in transmission and gl5 in my differential. hopefully shifting will improve. im changing the power steering fluid in this car too haha never been changed and its dirty.

thanks guys once again!

i tried to put fluid in today, man i couldnt get it in there. the space is soo tight. i used a psyphen tube and i put my thumb on one end and put the fluid on the other end. i squeezed the ball and then when it was full i released and it just went back into the bottle. i cannot get it in my transmission. good thing i tried to fill before i drained it, or i would be in deep trouble.

I bought a miti-vac with fluid transfer kit.
There are also other means to remove the fluid. If you are using one of those squeeze bulb setups, the oil is too think for these in my opinion. You need to get a good setup prior to starting or it will be a miserable job.

I would use either MTL or MT-90 or as suggested, a 50/50 mix of both.

For trannt and diffy fills, I use a plastic gallon jug that has a pump in it. Always heat these types of fluids to at least 85 F before filling.

I find the "Sta-Lube' gear oil pump works very well. It screws right on to the wide mouth Amsoil gear lube bottles.

Tooslick

thanks, i got to find those gadgets that u guys are using. i found one its a fluid pump in place of the psyphen. but its 13 bucks..gee...i wish i can get a miti vacumn myslef.

im going to go for the mt90 100% to see how it is. then in the future ill mix it with mtl, some people said its bad for this car if i do the mixture.

ahh sorrie, i double posted. hehe ill scratch that idea that guy had on that link. i bought a pump for 7 bucks at napa! thanks guys.

I have never used Redline motor oil so I dont know anything about it's suitability in a engine but Redline gear oil has cost me plenty.

I put redline in the quick change rear end on my pro-4 car and by the end of a 50 lap race the ring & pinion and the locker were burnt.

Afer taking it back to Speedway Engineering, they took one look at it and told me to NEVER put redline in either the rear end or the transmission as it just does not hold up to circle track abuse. Now I use nothing but Mobil1 and have not had a problem ... and the guys who run Amsoil never have any problems either.

Comments Please !!!!!!!!!!!!

Well, quite a few people told me not to use any Mobil gear oil, because it's nothing special. Redline came highly recommended, but I'm still looking.

psyphen?? Whats this mean?? siphon?

For installing lube in tight places get a "suction gun". They are less the $20 for a quality one at any auto parts store. Its looks very similar to a grease gun in size, has a tube on one end and a push handle on the other. Remove the end, fill with 1/2 qt of lube, insert in to fill hole and push in the lube. Used them for over 30 yrs and its the easier way to go. I tried those pumps that fit on the bottle, bug mess!

If I can find one on-line, I post a link so you can see what it looks like but if you walk into a auto parts store and tell them you want a good suction gun, they will know what to show you.

Here is one

I hate to write this because I am a biased source of information, but it is the truth, and GOD knows I am generally not a liar (other than female matters). I can hook you up with folks that can verify the incident, if you would like. I hesitated to post this in the past for obvious reasons and I am posting it now because of Red2Rebel and Bror's posts. The Redline was installed by me before I became an Amsoil dealer:

The only time I have ever had a differential fail was about 10 months after I switched to Redline 75W-140 (normal gear oil variety). The thing just started getting noisier and noisier, ate a pinion bearing, then blew the front seal (vent was clear). FULL of metal. I drained and replaced the bearing, seal and put petroleum gear oil in. Didn't fix it, damage done. I DO NOT know the ACTUAL cause of failure, and maybe indeed was a pure coincidence. I just swapped a whole rear end in and no problems. I now use Amsoil S2K 75W-140.

I have run Lakewood BFL fluid in my diffs for a few years now with no problems at all (although 12 bucks a quart for mineral oil seems kind of high). I switched to RP max gear yesterday actually. I cannot recommend it as of yet.....maybe in a few months, but I have used it in transmissions for years. I have never used redline or amsoil. I have a few buds who use redline and they swear it is great stuff. I don't know anyone who uses amsoil (probably because it is mail order only).
