Amsoil or Redline for Audi A4 ?

I was wondering about the oil guru's opinions here regarding the best oil to put into an Audi A4 2005.5 2.0T.

I was looking at Amsoil Synthetic 5W-40 European Motor Oil or Redline 5W40 ... perhaps some other recommendations

IMHO you should use ONLY officially Factory Approved and Listed oils for your car. Do those you suggest fit this criteria?

Since it gets very cold in Truckee in the winter, I'd run the Series 2000, 0w30 instead of the much thicker Amsoil 5w-40, although either will work just fine. I've used both of these products in the summers down in Alabama, in my 1.8L, 225 Hp Audi TT, with 10k service intervals.

If you decide to run RL, their 5w30 is the way to go and not the 5w-40....

to avoid any warranty issues you may have in the future I'd run owners manual recomended vis grades but to the low end due to winter temps to the teens. And I'd use a correct API lebeled oil while on warranty not that they are better just safer it something breaks keep a record then dealer can not hose you.
otherwise go with redline or chevron.

thanks, their specs are 5w-40 or 5w30 with VW 502 specs. I think that both meet the requirements.

Hi,
Nevering - as Bruce has alluded to, it is potentially in your best interest when under Warranty to use an oil that is Officially Approved and Listed by the engine's maker

Just because the Oil Company states on the label that an oil "meets" or "exceeds" a standard does NOT mean it is Approved for use by the engine's maker

The oils you mention are not necessarily "better" oils than those
Approved by the engine's maker

You can use Schaeffer's Series 9000 5W40. It is a good oil and meets your VW 502.00 specs, plus VW 505.00 and VW 505.01. It is a CI-4+/SL rated and is API Certified. Take a look here: Schaeffers 5W40

German Syntec 0w30 would be a good choice.

Both are great oils. I like the Amsoil in this one. RL also does well in German made engines wit different bearing materials.

Buster, your statment about the RL is confusing. Do you mean that RL is ok in some german made engines but not this one ?

No, what I meant was that RL shows well in German cars. The type of bearing material they use doesn't react (pb) the same as it does with Honda's. Do a search on RL and VW/Audi's and you'll see these are RL's best showing. Then again, many oils do well in these cars also.

Don't you get free maintance with your new Audi? The dealer would probably use synthetic German Castrol 0w-30, which is what I would go with even if it wasn't free.

The Audi dealer will probally use Belgian Syntec 5w-40. Approved oils would be the way to go. (cough)

The Belgian Castrol is a good 5k oil and is what VW uses but Audi does 8 or 10k oci's which require the VW 503.01 spec, right? I know the dealers have GC in the parts dept and should use it unless Audi now does the 5k oci. Even if GC is not avaliable, I would go with BC if it's free since it is a good oil.
