what's better to remove dirt from an uncared-for car:
KN HP-1008 or
Amsoil EA15K12-CA or
Mobil 1 Extended perform?

The amsoil appears to be "standard" rather than extended EAO filter, so not as good I guess? Same with the K&N being "standard" rather than their best. All are comparable price of $10.20 to 10.60.

Guess these filters aren't so "same" in price after all. Price for 24 each (including tax/shipping):

$268 KN HP-1008
$366 Amsoil EA15K12
$278 Mobil 1 Exten.Per.

Wonder why amsoil is so much more? Guess I'll go with the Mobil 1.

I personally buy the Mobil 1s through either Advance Auto Parts when they are on sale for $10 each + online discount code = $6.50 each.

or Amazon when they sell em for $6.50 each for a pack of 6 filters.

K&N or Amsoil can't even come close to those numbers.

Dangit. Well I purchased from Advance Auto but they charged 12.99 each minus 20% discount.

Or about $10.39. Amazon has it for $8.00
I'll just skip eating two candybars today ;-)

And now I see amazon has M1-EP filters for $6.50 (in a case). I canceled the AdvanceAuto order. I should have known amazon would be cheapest. (I bet the ACDelco filters I bought yesterday would also be cheaper on amazon, if I looked it up.)

Your question was which one protected better. In short the Amsoil. It costs more but it also has better filtering media too. In addition, it is more efficient. Higher cost doesn't always mean you get more; but, in this case it does.

I would get the largest oil filter that would fit your car. Baldwin makes good filters. I run larger than stock oil filters on my cars and even on my motorcycle.
If you have a engine that is dirty, a larger oil filter will trap more [censored] than the stock oil filter will. The oil will also go through the filter slower(because of its size and because it has much more filter material) and that will put less pressure on the stuff the filter is suppose to catch.

Wonder why you aren't looking at the full synthetic media Fram Ultra or Purolator Synthetic? Better than the synthetic blend M1 or K&N. I think the Ultra is the equal of the Amsoil for less money. The Pruo is a little lower on efficiency but still very good.

The reason why I prefer full syn media filters is that they generally have a much higher capacity, useful for long OCIs or for catching lot of loosened crud in your situation. The syn blend filters are primarily cellulose with some synthetic fibers mixed in to increase efficiency. that's fine but the capacity isn't as good as a full syn media (which may or may not matter).

Any of these are good filters, so don't think I'm busting your stones, it's just that the Ultra is a real bargain.

IMO....Fram 'Ultra'.....is the best bang for the buck in synthetic media filters.....and for long OCI's (up to 15K).... Just $8.97 at WalMart

I remember reading this in another thread but maybe worth repeating here. Amazon has many M1 filters at $8 each. My family has Prime so now I can get filters for my 01 F150 and 98 Legacy for $8 + tax. Yes!
