I was browsing Amsoil specs earlier and noticed the OE 10w30 has a low volatility of 5.8% I think, it also has a pretty low pour point of -40f, which is pretty good for a 10w30.

Does this indicate that the basestocks used to formulate the 10w30 are better than the rest of the OE line which hover right around 10% volatility?

The 10w30/OE and XL formulations require less VI modifier and less pour point depressant additives. Both of which increase volatility. They're also probably blended using a thicker Group III base stock which is less volatile.

Buster, will this oil perform well in cold temps or poor? It's pour point is low, but so is its VI. My S2000 specs 10w30, so realize all oils in that grade have a relatively low VI. I was mainly curious about this oil for its low volatility and higher HTHS.

Is it a good option to OTC 10w30s, or is it too heavy for winter performance?

You can run Amsoil's 10w30 in the summer and their 0w30 in the winter or just use the 0w30 year around as I do in temps ranging from 0*F. to 100*F.

Both oils are 30 weight, but the 0w30 has the edge in cold temps.

I find it weird - the diesel or 10w30 is much thicker than 'regular' or 10w30, but it has higher noak at 8.6....viscosity index is the same for both oils....

^Probably due to a different formulation approach to achieve the desired characteristics of the 2 products.

For the diesel stuff, since it's the OE line, they're not going to use any exotic basestocks to achieve a high enough HTHS for an HDEO but still retain CCS requirements for a 10W oil. So they likely had to use VII's in the OE Diesel formulation which accounts for the higher volatility, lower flash point, and higher KV.

Just my guess
