Amsoil MTG in Civic??

I've used Amsoil MTF (5w30) in the 5spd trans of my 95 Civic with good success. One of my synchros is a little grindy and things feel a little loose.

Would there be any harm in running Amsoil MTG (75W-90) instead? Or perhaps a blend of the two? I'm thinking that a slight bump in viscosity and anti-wear additives might be helpful, but I'm not sure!

The s20 transmissions were designed around a 30wt synchromesh fluid, not a gear lube, try Pennzoil synchromesh it should smooth that out.

I've actually used Pennzoil synchromesh too. Nothing wrong with it, but it doesn't perform much differently than the Amsoil.

I've used the OEM, Pennzoil Synchromesh and Amsoil. Didn't notice much if any difference.

I think you should consider bleeding your clutch fluid first before switching to MTG. You might also have someone look at your clutch master cylinder to see if there is a leak. Fluid leaking around the top of your clutch pedal or on your floor mat is a good place to look for evidence. I had to change my S2000 MC at 65K miles about two months ago. It took care of a lot of shifting problems that I just became accustomed to over the years.

I notice large differences between synchromesh brands, but most of that is because of the wide range of temps my car sees.

And I drive my cars a lot harder than the avg person.

I haven't yet heard a Honda/Acura manual that doesn't whine in reverse.

I'd try it. Surely better for worn parts. Shifting can go either way when cold - warm/hot should be great.

I have 1/2 qt of MTG left over. Thinking about mixing it with 1.5qts MTF.

Blending them is fine.

The blend seems to work fine. Not sure if the notchy shift is any better. Nice to know that there are some GL-4 additives floating around, protecting things

The amsoil MTF has plenty of additive in it, I would think adding the gear oil would make the resulting oil thicker than desired for a tight tolerance Honda gearbox. One option noone has memtionrd is the redline mtf. You might try that also.
I am currently using the amsoil mtf in my accords transmission and like it. Previously I used both versions of the Honda fluid. Is it your second gear that is acting up? One thing I have found is it dropes into gear better if you pause in neutral briefly before dropping down to second.

It's the 3-4 shift that buzzes. Double-clutching and shifting more slowly helps.

Seems to drive fine this way, not a big difference. I figure I went from a viscosity of about 9.5 to 11 or so.

For this older model, which spec'd to be able to use 10w30 OR 10w-40 engine oil in the absence of HG MTF; I'd say the current ratio is fine.

Amsoil MTF is a little bit thinner than the Red Line MTL(much like a 10w30 or 70w-80 gear oil).
