I'm planning on changing out the diff oil in my '06 G35 coupe that has a VLSD. I can't find the recommended 80W-90 in a synthetic but the local Amsoil dealer can bring in some of their 80w-90. Any experiences with the Amsoil gear oil and is it worth the money?

well worth the money. Amsoil gear oils are usually priced about the same as M1 and other syns. IMO Amsoil has the best gear lubes on the market.

Also you can run a 75w90 in that differential as well if you would like.

Amsoil gear oil is all I ever use. I'm using that exact gear oil in my Nissan rear diff (see sig,Amsoil AGL). If you were going to slightly deviate from FSM spec,go with Amsoil Severe Gear 75W110 (which is what I'll use next drain/fill).

Why would a higher grade and/or sever gear be warranted?

Not really sure. Amsoil's lube match recommends it for my car as an alternative:

1996 Nissan 300ZX

Standard Differential, Rear......GL-5
30 To 100 F......90
SEVERE GEAR 75W-90 Synthetic EP Lubricant (SVGQT)
75W-90 Synthetic Long Life Gear Lube (FGRQT)
SEVERE GEAR 75W-110 Synthetic EP Lubricant (SVTQT)
SAE 80W-90 Synthetic Gear Lube (AGLQT)

2006 Infinity G35:

Differential, Rear......GL-5
Below 100 F......80W-90
SAE 80W-90 Synthetic Gear Lube (AGLQT)
SEVERE GEAR 75W-90 Synthetic EP Lubricant (SVGQT)
75W-90 Synthetic Long Life Gear Lube (FGRQT)
SEVERE GEAR 75W-110 Synthetic EP Lubricant (SVTQT)

I'd use any GL5 synthetic 75w90 or 75w110, which opens up any and all brands available locally to you.

"Severe Gear" is the name of the product. It is an excellent gear oil.

Higher grade in a diff will usually protect better. SAE90's and 80w90's were thicker before the SAE J-spec rewrite and is where some of the 75w110's fit in now.

SAE old J306
SAE 90 13.5-24cst
SAE 140 24-41cst

New J306
SAE 90 13.-18.5cst
SAE 110 19.5-24cst
SAE 140 24-32.5cst

Thanks for the info everyone. I ended up going with the 80w-90 Amsoil. The price did end up being the same as other synthetics such as M1, Royal Purple etc. The winters where I am usually don't go below -10 to -15 celsius so I should be okay with the thicker grade.

Good choice!

It's good stuff. I can't attest that it is any better than Mobil 1 or the other makes, but I use it and also do a regular amount of heavy towing. I have observed that after a lot of towing, both seem to pour out thinner--- Mobil 1 seems to come out thinner than amsoil, but that is purely subjective.
