Amsoil filter; really necessary?

Hey all. This isn't meant as yet another "call Amsoil into question" thread, I like the stuff and I'm planning on running either ASL or HDD in my Civic for the next year. What I'm curious about is whether the Amsoil filter is really necessary for that interval or would a K&N or even a NAPA Gold do the job? Just trying to lower the cost a little bit.

I was thinking of maybe 3 changes with NAPA filters instead of the 2 with Amsoil SDF? That way I'd refresh the additives a little bit more and possibly carry away some of the pollutants...

What interval?

Without UOA, I would only run standard OCI intervals.

Any filter can be used!

I agree, get a used oil analysis done and you can use any filter.

If you're running a year-long interval, I wouldn't hesitate to run a Napa Gold filter through a 6 month period. Very well built filters.

Judging by the filter study on here, Amsoil have one of the best compromises between filtration and flow and is built very well. I think it is a better filter than any of the others mentioned in this thread.

I have always used their filters. I would rather pay a little extra knowing they are made it the USA and who makes them (Hastings/Baldwin). With many of the other brands today, you never know who or where they are made and weather or not they cut quality to save on production costs. Amsoil markets theirs as "built to last"


With Amsoil I know what I am getting, with others who knows.

Well, luckily my Wix (Napa Gold) filters are made in the USA. Flows 7-9 GPM, and filters to 19 absolute. Pretty **** good stats if you ask me; and I've cut a few open and am perfectly confident in their construction.

I've seen what I'm getting. No need to spend more on a filter. Especially for a measly 6 month interval.

The only good reason I've heard for using Amsoil filters for the longer filtration interval is that some cheap filters have rubber compounds in the gasket and antidrainback valve that may not las that long with the heat. Any good filter with silicone rubber parts should be fine. Nitrile rubber parts might harden from the heat & time.

I think Amsoil filters are OK, but honestly I don't use them all the time. I personally like the Ford filters and am using two on turbo Volvo (with dual remote full flow mount). I have done 10K intervals with no issues.

Your right, it's a good compromise, near the top filtration with above average flow. There may be a few cheaper alternatives though that are also good compromises.

I've used an oversized Napa Gold on my used oil analysis runs and Terry commented on how well they worked.

5,000 and 10,000 miles.

Just one man's opinion but since your using Amsoil I like to stick with matching product. Product to product i.e I don't know if it's marketing claims or what but I was always under the small impression that products seem to work better when there matched up with one another. But that's just me,,,AR

I used a K&N oil filter on a 98 Silverado and although it was sold before the OCI was needing a change, but it seemd to run very well with this filter.
