Afternoon all. Just got an oil change kit in for the Prius as I was burning some coupons before they expired. I didn’t need the filter but whatever.

I also searched for discussion found a previous one from April but couldn’t find any pics. If I didn’t search hard enough appologies.

Still wire backed it seems. What gave it away was how much lighter it felt.

Also if I count right 10 vs 13 inlet holes.

The filter dates are 2 years apart but I have a couple made in 23 that also had a metal core.

Just sharing for curiosities sake. And no not an advertisement for NongShim I swear. Just a sturdy box I used.

Edit: I also just realized the new filter is round and not fluted at the top. Which means the filter wrench I have for the EA15k09 that Amsoil sold won't work anymore...

i hope all of the fully synthetic champ filters go this way. E-core+wire backed media FTW.

Based on the fact that some Champ Labs Royal Purple have been ecore for a while, not all that surprising. 'For me' though, I'd be more interested in how the bypass seal area looks, ie, how it looks with a flashlight applied.

Just a little update. The new ecore filter is fluted, however it doesn't work with the same filter wrench that Amsoil sold that worked with the metal core version. For the metal core version the Amsoil wrench is nice and snug, use that same wrench on the ecore version and it has tons of slop and inspires no confidence. However, now the ecore version works with my MotivX Toyota Wrench head that works for OEM filters, and worked for the Champ XL filter as well. It works perfect on the new Amsoil ecore, and doesn't fit well for the metal core version.

Hope that helped someone.

^ Filter wrench recommended for removal only.
I've used a fluted cap tool on a few filters to tighten them. A fluted cap that fits well isn't going to hurt the filter during installation. Now a strap type wrench that goes around the weaker sides of the filter may cause damage, but the fluted area on the end cap it pretty robust with the right fluted cap tool.

I'm just basing it on what I've seen Wix and Mahle say (which I might assume you would want to exceed as with multipass efficiency :D?)

I would be cautious of installing an oil filter with a tool. Spin it until the gasket touches the flange, then tighten 3/4 of a turn. Doing that for 40 years now. Never had one leak yet. If using a tool to get the 3/4 of a turn, rock on, just make sure you don't over-tighten it.

Just have to use the right tool to tighten, which is a fluted end cap tool that fits correctly.
