Amsoil Ea - expected life in years not miles

I'm thinking of changing to an Amsoil Ea air filter next time my air filter is due.

It is not so much the cost saving as the stated efficiency, less environmental waste and convenience of knowing that I can vacuum the filter and replace it rather than wonder how long I can keep using or reusing a conventional filter.

But I will only drive 5k to 10k miles a year and the filter service life is 4 years.

Should I go strictly by this stated service life? If not, how many years could I actually go with it?

5+ years. Maybe 10 years? Just an estimate, but with the polymer portion not in the sun it should last quite a long time.

I agree. The better the sealing materials, the longer it can resist heat aging, ozone, chemical and all that. Amsoil uses high grade materials in their filters so it should be able to last a good long time. I don't see an issue with a 10 year timeframe with the Amsoil. Maybe longer. I got some inside info on how long a well known cleanable filter could last and was told "20 years or more." They asked not to be quoted because they don't want to stand behind that as an "official" warranty, but that number was derived from testing filters that had been in service that long. And materials just keep getting better and better (compared to 20 years ago), so the stuff now may be even better.

An off-the shelf filter... I would be a little more careful there. A cleanable or long-life filter will have the materials to match a "lifetime" rating. A filter designed for a 30K interval may not be that well constructed... even though it may well be able to last that time period, it's just less sure. Based on what I have researched, I would say about 5-8 years on a premium off-the shelf filter. I asked this question of an off-the shelf replacement filter manufacturer and was told "3-5 years" as the CYA answer.

One thing about a cleanable filter is that it is designed to be cleaned. I sense that ordinary filters can get damaged from vacuuming or shop air. Lexus once gave me a free service and cleaned the cabin air filter. It did not perform the same after that.

Apart from Amsoil, what brands do you consider the best for air filters or are in your category of premium? One of my applications is not provided by Amsoil.

I have both Amsoil and AFE Dryflow here. Some of the Ea filters are over 5 years old and get yearly cleanings.

The Dryflow gets dipped in tide and rinsed.

All are holding up well in fleet use with high miles...

AirRaid, and AEM also make 'lifetime', dry, washable filters, but their application coverage is even worse than aFe's.
