Vehicle:
2006 Scion tC

Oil:
Amsoil AZO 0W30

Oil additives:
None

Make up oil added: Three (3) quarts was added total. I added half a quart post the first sampling @ 7,500 miles and added the rest of the bottle @ 9,000 miles.

Engine oil capacity:
4.1

Oil filter:
TINY Mobil 1 (much smaller then the OEM filter)

Air filter:
Whatever cheap piece of [censored] air filter is on the aftermarket "Cold Air Intake" that's on the car. Thinking of eventually replacing it with an Amsoil cone when the time comes.

USE: Mostly highway/city @ 70/30. The wife does roughly 50 miles daily round trip to work and back and i beat on it when she gets home while i do my errands, ranking up another 50 miles or so while bouncing off the rev limiter, so the miles rack up quick.

The VOA of this oil can be found here: VOA of the AZO from the same batch

I decided to go ahead and change the oil after i sent off the sample because i thought the TBN would be lower but now wish i would have kept it in use and ran up to 12k.

I changed the oil with some more AZO from the same batch / case. I replaced the PCV valve and hope that will help the oil consumption. Only time will tell.

Thoughts? Comments?

Nice... Don't ya just love the extra shot of Moly in the new Amsoil SS oils?

Considering the amount of oil your engine is using I would run this to a 15K OCI anyway.

Well i'm hoping the oil consumption will go back down to what was normal just 10k ago (half a quart every 5k miles)

If it continues to munch on oil at the same rate, i agree that i can easily go longer with such a large amount of makeup oil added

It looks good on paper, i agree. Can't say i noticed any difference. Maybe the Moly is the cause of my now excessive oil consumption

I'm just kidding.

Since i'm TRYING to extend the OCIs with this car, that wouldn't be such a bad thing but at the same time, i don't want it to be burning so much oil. I'd be happy with a quart every 10k. Two at the most but three is a bit too much, esp with this engine which is nothing special (just a Camry engine)

It's technically coming up on 1/3rd TBN left with TAN nearing 2x the original spec as well.

Although according to Blackstone's scale, i could keep going and probably reach 15k with the TBN being 1.0 or so, I imagine TAN would be through the roof in the 7-8 range and i'm just not comfortable with that.

Have you checked/replaced your PCV valve?

Time for an Amsoil air filter! Although things look good now I bet things can improve in the Fe and Cr dept with a more efficient air filter.

I have been eagerly awaiting your UOA's Artem! Great run but I really wonder why oil consumption appears to have increased pretty dramatically since the switch from the Amsoil OE. Did your driving habits change? Seems like quite a coincidence. Just an observation. Thanks for posting.

When are you gonna do the Valve cover pics?

In 10-15k, closer to the end of the year i suppose.

Driving conditions remained the same for the most part.

The two previous reports with Amsoil OE were of just my wife driving it, prior to us getting married.

This AZO fill was with my abusive driving added into the mix which got a lot worse after i got rid of my Civic Si and had nothing but the poor tC to beat on when i needed a dose of spirited driving

I'm guessing the poor Camry engine simply can't handle bouncing off the redline as well as my Si could.

While 1 quart every 3,500 miles isn't excessive it 'seems' to be normal for your driving style/engines, when compared to the Si and other engines you've driven near redline often.

How do the oil control rings of the tC Sion's compare to Civics/Si models???

I replaced the PCV valve after i took the sample.

Do you really think the current air filter is that bad? Would wear rates really improve with just a simple air filter change?

^This, I'd change AZO by 7.5 TAN for 'comforts sake' but as long as TBN is present there is enough active additive to neutralize the 'harmful' portion of the 'acidic' number.

An Amsoil cone filter as a direct replacement of the one currently installed(unless the one installed got damaged b/c of orientation or being over-sized at all?), would probably yield slightly lower iron but the entry of Si doesn't seem to be spiking wear at all. I mean really, take away iron and it looks like virgin oil.

It's interesting to observe some of the differences in UOA's of the same engines. We have an 02 Camry in the fleet with over 250K miles on it. Same 2.4 engine and it uses relatively little oil between OCI's, about 1/3 Qt at the most. ( 8-10K miles, Amsoil SSO 0W30 oil and Amsoil EaO 15k10 filter.)

It is currently driven about the same 50 miles daily as your Scion, combination of expressway and urban driving. Have to admit it just about never sees the redline and is driven pretty easy.

Also noticed the calcium level on your OCI is higher than that reported on the VOA.

Beats me, bud. Doesn't seem to like revving to redline all that much since oil consumption is through the roof compared to just half a quart every 5k like before...

The Si was revving to 8,800rpm daily, in every gear for 112,000 miles.
This thing only spins to 6,300-ish
