Amsoil and CJ-4, low SAPS oils

It looks like Amsoil will be coming out with two different, CJ-4 formulations this fall. One will be their licensed, PCO/15w-40 and the other may be a new formulation altogether. I wouldn't be surprised to see a new CJ-4 oil in an SAE 5w-40 grade. The basestock would look like their original 5w-40, European oil in terms of high/low temp viscometrics, but with reduced add levels to meet the chemical limits of CJ-4.

I believe they'll keep their 15w40/AME and Series 3000, 5w30 the same, for use in older engines.

The TBN limit for CJ-4 is 8-9. I have been running Series 30005w30 in both my 2002 Duramax with Bypass and the oil in my 2003 Jetta. How can they keep it the same with sulphur levels dropping so much in light of extended drain intervals?

I would welcome a HDD 5W40. I have had requests for this oil here in Canada.

Will the low SAPS be a requirement for the U.S.? Mobil has a 5w-40 ESP formula that is low SAPS.

Its a reality by end of year. Seen it at the meeting in Chaska, they had some on display. CJ4 5W-40, Its backward compaitble but the current HDD oils are not going to work with any diesel built after 1/1/2007. They saud its been extemely hard work to come up with this product due to all the new USLD rules to meet.

New oil with have a lower TBM due to EPA limits on additives to protect the new exhaust filters from damage.

Other things they mentioned were;

Wix filters for every model even if EAO and EAA are available
More Hi-Perf models (cones)
More EA air and oil filters
Car care line being phased out (exc. Miracle wash) to be replaced by MOTHERS entire line (stocked at all DC's)

These new USLD rules are so costly that one Wis truck firm bought 150 new trucks (semis) this year to avoid having to buy after these take effect.

The DEO will be availible October 1st. The quarts are already bottled, and gallons were to be bottled today. The price is just a tad above the AME(15W40).

man oh man... looks lieka lot of 'closet' amsoil dealers on here... lots of knowledge on the product!.

Out of curiosity, werent HDEOs previously only extended drainwise based upon UOA previously? And, wasnt baseline interval decided by engine manufacturer, all the same too?

TBN shouldnt make as much of a difference if you dont have the corrosive byproducts from the sulfur compounds, to load into your oil...

ULSD and all the associated rules might be a tough transition, especially since it seems that the change is hitting too much too fast (management issue), but IMO it will be very beneficial to a number of things, including oil technology, and consumer engine rollouts.

One thing that suprises me is that the euro spec 5w-40 will have a higher additive content level than the HDEO! I wonder if that is for the entire additive package, or if that is just with respect to some components that are in question. I wonder if a 2007+ spec design HDEO would be a very good oil to use as a PCMO, all things considered... It would be a bit friendlier on the car's catalyzed systems, yet be as robust as any normal PCMO, in a viscosity that is a toughie to find lots of options for...

This is what I am concerned about. The new SAPS Diesel oil won't be robust for extended 10K and further because of the new rules centered around TBN additive levels. Any one with additive knowledge please jump in

ease my mind or confirm my paronoia

Once we see how the oil holds up then there may be a change in OCI.
