I have recently put Amsoil 5w30 in my 99 Camry and 03 Envoy. I bought the XL extended life synthetic and I am wondering how long I can run the vehicles on this oil. I believe the bottle says 7500 miles. Could I go 5000, change the filter, then another 5000, or is 7500 the limit with Amsoil? Any help would be great. I thought I was getting the 25,000 mile oil and was going to go 15,000 with filter changes at 5000, but I ended up with the 7500. I am using Purolator filters if that makes a difference at all. In the past I have used Penzoil Platinum and run it to 10000 miles with filters at 3300 or so. I am tempted to go back to Penz Plat if I can't get more than 7500 out of the Amsoil. I've heard it's a great product, but the Penz is a lot cheaper and is supposed to be a great oil. Thanks

Do you have UOA's with the Pennzoil? If all is well with the engines you can do 10K with a filter swap and oil top off at 5K. Most all UOA's I've see show it quite capable of going 10K.

Where did you buy the oil?

Shortly after the XL came on the market, an individual ran oil samples to see how long it would last. In his car, with his type operation, it lasted something over 25,000 miles, best I recall.
The 7500 to 10,000 miles is related to the OEM maximum recommended oil change intervals.

For a bit more, the ASL 5W-30 will last longer than the XL.

I remeber the action news article, the vehicle was a Pontiac transport van and the oil was tested until it reached 34,000 miles when it needed changing

Is it true that only the ASL is 100% synthetic. I believe the XL and TSO are not all synthetic even though the TSO is more expensive.

Not correct. Perhaps you are thinking that ASL has more PAO, slightly less ester content than TSO.

Which leaves me as confused as ever.

Let's take this one at a time.

1)Both oils are full synthetic.
2) ASL is mostly all PAO base oil, with some small amount of ester base oil, and of course the additive package. It costs less than TSO.
3) TSO is also a PAO oil, but more esters than ASL, and hence costs more than ASL.

Make sense?

Love your one-step approach and once again feel reasonably smart. Thank you!

Yes I didn't mention the TSO additive package. It's gonna be cool when it gets beefed up.

Any idea as to when the TSO formula will change.

Mario17, if you buy your Amsoil at say a Napa's alot of time all they carry is XL line...because it meet API specs...If you want to see he fabulous Amsoil line don't hesitate to see one of our sponsors on this site they ca advise you and direct you to their Amsoil website...they support this site with cold cash so we need to buy from them

...I am running XL but I would not run it out to 10000...I guess from what I just read Pablo thinks it would be okay with a filter change and topoff...he does say a UOA is needed to make sure this engine is healthy...
