Ho-Hum (least favorite)
10.96 4 Shell Rotella T Triple Protection 15W40 CJ-4 CJ-4
27.55 9 Amsoil Premium Synthetic 5W40 CJ-4 CJ-4
10.80 11 Castrol Tection 15W40 CJ-4 CJ-4
12.99 17 Chevron Delo 400 LE 15W40 CJ-4 CJ-4UMM,

Amsoil were in the bottom category in that blind analysis review and it costs two arms and one leg a quart. Their fans won't like it as they all worship their snake oil sales team.
They were testing for use in the big diesels, so perhaps they might do better with petrol engines.

That's a really good article and I would worry that it won't get the attention it deserves here since the original post is more of an AmsOil bash than it probably needed to be.

Here's some good advice from it (at least I think so, it's my advice as well):

"So, what oil should you use? I have a buddy at Freightliner who
has an interesting philosophy about purchasing engine oil. He goes
to the store and looks at all the oils with the latest performance
spec. He then buys the oil that
is on sale at the time. That’s not a bad philosophy"

Just one point I forgot to mention is that the 5W40 will cause a lot less cold start wear than the 15W40 oils, but the test did provide interesting results in terms of how long the oil will last, rather than actual UOA results. Also they failed to test the better LM Diesel Synthoil 5w40 to see how it compared and used the LM conventional 15w40 which is real cheap stuff the Germans don't use much at home.

That article dates back to 2007, so don't look at the analysis results and think that those are current formulations. The TDR (of which I'm a member) published a new oil analysis article in their last issue.

This is not a used oil analysis; it's an article on VOAs.
Moving to correct forum.
Please keep threads in the correct sub-forums.

First of this has been posted many, many times over the years here. 2007?

Trying an attack with your subject or was this really the title of this thoroughly unscientific "study"? There are no test results. Just a guy chatting about inaccurate, old, biased $20 VOA's. His report has NOTHING at all to do with real world results. NOTHING. If you interpret this information as some kind of motor oil comparison then you really know very little about motor oil.

Mostly written by a guy who seems to be talking through his hat. He as much as says HDEO's can't be extended in usage. What? It's done every day. Pretty much tells me he doesn't know the industry.

Even weirder are the two Amsoil diesel oils. Two 5W-40's. One a CI-4. Amsoil never, ever made such an oil. There are so many reasons to call this "study" bunk, but a huge one for me is this. Just what Amsoil oil is it that they ran the VOA on? Neither of the Amsoil oils tested come close to the VOA's and used oil analysis we've seen posted here.

Mr. Newton summed it up nicely in one of the earlier threads.

I would challenge anyone to show me how the product ranking that the article touts can actually be replicated in real world results.

Where is that? Are the cams in a diesel engine made from different metals than the cam in a gas engine? The T6 I'm using has +-1200ppm zzdp, would think wear is not an issue.

The cams are made of harder steel, but the problems with older petrol engines that suffered cam wear when the Zinc was reduced were mostly caused by Chinese parts being used in rebuilt engines or owners using very cheap supermarket oil, as the Zinc was only cut to 1000 ppm in most good oils. The higher content was bad news for modern CATS and EGR valves.
Some classic car folks do use Zinc additives in cheaper oils, but the good ones have enough alternative ant-wear additives to be OK.
A high Calcium figure is good for diesels and most older petrol engines, but obviously DYOR.

Yep. Last time I checked, people who use HDEOs (i.e. truckers) were among the first to extend OCIs.

Exactly. This "article" is a crock.

I concur.

Inputs are interesting and have merit if placing a wager on a ball game.
Outputs tell you how well the game was actually played, and who won.
This "article" is not a good piece for decision making.

Synsthetics (and/or bypass filtration) are the building blocks of extended OCIs. Amsoil, in particular, has a well-earned reputation in that manner.

OOPS!! I failed to notice that the Amsoil article was an old one, so as some of you said it is no longer of interest and appologies for that error.

Drifting off topic, BUT how do you cancel a new thread as I would like to cancel or combine both of my LM UOA ones?

Also drifting off topic, I have given up trying to find a long life or higher performance filter for my V40 1.9D. I have tried all the makers and written half a dozen e mails to no effect. I know they must make one and Bosche are top of my list for a better filter, unfortunately I just can't figure out the part number until they start selling them in the EU.

As for your used oil analysis, I suggest you use the block-text tool (notepad or such) and then create a file. Then insert it in a new thread when you post your next successive UOA.

As for the filter topic, please post any question you have in the filter sub-forum.

What about Mann W 920/38? Their filters are rated for 30k km, if I'm not mistaken.
