Maybe this is old news, but I just happened upon this at the amsoil site:

http://www.amsoil.com/performancetests/g1971/index.aspx

Shows some severe weaknesses in pennzoil platinum, IMO... as well as in M1 EP oil.

Dont know how much of it is marketing hype or skewed results... but I cant pass blame like that right now... not enough data.

I just thought it was interesting and some might like ot see.

Old news. It is what it is, a test done by Amsoil. M1 EP faired extremely well and other then Noak, was right on par with Amsoil.

The PP Thin film oxegyn uptake test results were disappointing, but ask yourself this.."What oil was known to thicken more than others among all synthetics?" = Amsoil. Yet they always showed great lab test results in that specific test. Real world?? While they might have improved since then, it makes me wonder.

I commend Amsoil for testing the competition, however selective they are. PP did show great 4-ball wear test results but I don't put much into that test anyway.

I would think the only one that really matters would be the 4 ball wear test where PP and M1 did well. Even then, they are not real world test of wear levels in an engine.

Kinda' odd that they would choose an 10w30 oil weight that few new vehicles recommend. Perhaps this non-recommended weight looks better in test results than 5W-20, 0w30 and 5w30???? Is this more-of-the-same Amsoil salesmen trickery?

I like the tests as it shows
difference in same family oils

MC seems to do better than TA in most tests
meaning maybe there is a 50 cents worth of additives over TA.

Shell and Penn dino a toss up on performance but Shell is often 1/2 Penn's price. Shell is one of Kragens semimonthly 49 cent oils.

Chevron outperformed Havoline and is usually cheaper or a Kragen 49 cent oil.

It'd be nice to see another test to see if this is just sample and batch differences

Good point, buster. If Amsoil always does so well in their TFOUT and NOACK tests, why does it become as thick as molasses on extended OCIs?

Molasses? I'm not sure what the 100°C vis is of molasses.

Yes, please look at the UOA's. Maybe one grade thicker, of course. Most, no grade change. Especially the newest.

As far as 3MP, M1 thickened more percentage wise and had a filter change and oil top up. Amsoil didn't get that help.

Wal-Mart Supertech syn conspicuously absent....hmmmm........

85P @25°C, but I would think most educated people would of understood it to be a hyperbole.

If the newest blends don't thicken out of grade great! I was commenting on all the UOAs I recall, and the fact that Amsoil advertising has consistently shown graphs of superior TFOUT and NOACK compared to other brands for years now.

Fine let's look at the values before the filter change at the 12K mile point. Heck, I'll even be more fair than this and choose the 11K mile point since there appears to be an anomaly at 12K in favor of M1. Both used 3 qts of make up oil. M1 increase 6%, Amsoil increase 12%.

In the future I hope you demand such factual information from all posts, especially the ones from the side you always seem to be attacking from.

Yehaw, already up in flames

.

I believe if a car calls for 5w30 that 10w30 is ok in above freezing temperatures. My car actually says to use 10w30 instead of 5w30 if temperature is above freezing. (2004 Pontiac Sunfire).

I've seen some UOAs where Amsoil thickened - If my memory serves me, not ALL. I'm running a long OCI of Amsoil and will see this for myself if it is true with the 5w30HDD. OK with me as my car calls for 5w40 in Europe.

Amsoil is testing better than all oils - FACT. Though I still believe it is the UOAs that tell you what is best for your engine.

I know hyperbole, but does it not paint the wrong metal image? Molasses? 8000 cP - holy moley!

I am not attacking. I wrote "Keep it factual". The assumption that Amsoil always thickens, always oxidizes is just a wrong projection, that's all I'm trying to portray. I'm not denying it hasn't ever happened - but does it always thicken? In my car and my customer's cars it just doesn't happen, new or old. I'm not trying to start or continue a war, it's just I feel some statements need rebuttal. Please allow me this freedom.

The attack of saying that "Amsoil always thickens" is no different than saying that Amsoil "will poison your catalytic converter because of 'too much' phosphorous." Until there is 100% proof on the matter for every instance, it is nothing more than a statement made from an observer.

For observations, I'll just say that Mobil 1 will thicken as well, or shear, and to quote, "Look at the UOAs and 3MP's test for facts."

Come on folks, how about a little intellectual honesty here? Some of Amsoil's products have had a history of thickening, and even thickening out of grade. A little hyperbole and some people start blowing a head gasket.

Besides the 3MP test, here's a randomn sampling of UOAs. You can debate the merit of each one, but I think it's obvious there's a general trend here.

If you read my original post, I asked a question. I didn't bad mouth Amsoil as I'm so often falsely accused of by some people. How about answering the question instead of attacking the messenger?

Dude, what planet are you from? And who ever said "Amsoil will poison your catalytic converter because of 'too much' phosphorous"? Give us a link so that all can read what was actually said. Or to quote Pabs, "Keep it factual, guys".

I'm not "blowing a head gasket", please. I never said Amsoil didn't thicken, but you said "always".....

and that is a strong word, no matter how much you try to explain it away. Again I am not attacking, please do not take it that way.

First one has a coolant leak, second one slightly out of grade, third one has HIGH Na and is barely out of grade, 4th one had "the code read "insufficient EGR flow". " and strange lab report, 5th one had high Na and carb cleaner cleaner and was just barely out of range..........last one went 24K and yes thickened. Barely.

I didn't see one as thick as molasses.

Why Amsoil used to thicken? I wish I knew, everyone assumes oxidation. I'm not so sure.

I did keep it factual, some people have said "Amsoil always thickens" and "Amsoil will poison your catalytic converter." I looked into multiple forums about Amsoil before ever using it, those were some of the main arguments. I was just google searching "Amsoil forums" maybe those are still up, maybe they're not, but I'd get a lot of mixed reviews.

I acknowledge the fact that Amsoil will thicken, in some applications only though, not every engine will thicken the oil. I don't think a one grade change over 20,000 miles is anything to worry about, since it has been said on this forum multiple times that the most shear stable oil will thicken gradually.
