Hey guys I am in a bit of a dilemma here. I bought a bunch of John Deere 0w-40 synth HDEO on Ebay cheap for use in my wife's 2001 TDI Jetta. Only problem was, when I sent it off to Blackstone for a VOA, this is what I got back:

John Deere 0w-40 Synthetic HDEO UOA

Granted this oil does not even look like an HDEO, but I got a bunch of it and I want to use it up. So tonight at Farm and Fleet I stocked up on the legendary VSOT (which I have never used yet) to spike this oil with to stouten it up a bit. I plan to run it out 5K intervals (half normal) until it is gone. How much should I add to get it to respectable additive levels but not overly thicken it for cold N. Illinois winter?

Thanks.

probably a closeout sell off as all the oil manuf's and marketers sell off their supplies of CI4 and do the change over to CJ

Okay so does this mean you guys are suggesting that Blackstone's analysis is wrong and I don't need anything else in it, or what?

If not, any suggestions on how much to put in without throwing off viscosity?

Also can someone tell me, using 74.6 as the 100C viscosity for the VSOT at 1.5 oz per 32 oz oil and the oil at 15.7 at 100C what my final viscosity will be? I keep coming up with a higher number than what I thought it would be. I hope 1.5 oz/32oz oil is okay for cold morning startups. Supposed to be 6 degrees Sunday AM. Changing oil tomorrow.

Thanks

I studied adding this to M1 0w40. 1 oz./qt. will add about 100ppm moly and 75ppm zn, plus some boron, Mg and Ca. If you want to naintain the viscosity add about 2 oz of 0w20 per oz. VSOT.

I use VSOT in a similar manner as Auto-RX and LC prescribe. 5 oz at oil change(one per quart) and an ounce or two every 700-1000 miles. I add more often (700 mi) if there was a lot of short trip stop and go driving and less often(1000mi) if there were long road trips in the interval.

Runkle, have you done any UOAs to show this to be working well?

I wonder if 1.5 oz/qt. will turn my 0w-40 into 5w-50?

no, sorry UOA's. I'm using this on some really cheap WPP oil I got at the Post Exchange (branded Lubriguard). This stuff doesn't hold visc. too well to start with so I figure the VSOT can only help.

Steelhead--I appreciate your input. I changed the oil this afternoon, and just read your latest messages. Sounds like a good idea, however, I get leery of throwing all the different oil products in together. Probably would be okay, but on the long drains the TDI is capable of, who knows how they would all get along? Even for the 5k intervals I am planning with my VSOT mix.

What I ended up doing was throwing in 1.5 oz VSOT per qt. of oil. It may thicken it to a 50 weight, MAYBE, but I don't think it will be too thick for startup since I started with a 0w-40 weight oil. It might be close to a 5w-50 but 5w is still okay for winter here I think.

I pulled a sample of the Schaeffer's 9000 as it came out after 10K tonight, and will pull a sample of my concoction at 5K on this stuff and see how they compare, or if this mix is good enough to run longer.

The mix I decided to use was:
Synpower Oil Treatment 1 oz./qt
GM EOS 1/4 oz./qt
M1 0w20 2 oz. (to thin)
This adds about 175 ppm ZDDP, 100 ppm Moly, 35 ppm Boron, and 80 ppm Mg, and shouldn't change viscosity much.

try Butler's UOA on next change and send them a VOA of your mix...let's see what their equip. reads out....

Mobil 1 does have some moly

how much is GM EOS now and what is the viscosity?...used to use it in engine rebuilds....was outstanding in protecting new flat tappet high rpm cams, roller cam chains and sprockets
