I know very little about guns and ammunition and I know a little about construction tools but I need some help. 13 year old boy in school pulls out of his pocket and shows a classmate a handful of "ammunition." Teacher sees it, calls the police, boy is suspended pending an expulsion hearing for bringing bullets to school. Boy claims they are shells used for firing nails into concrete. Says no one was in danger. I've seen those at Home Depot. Are they not basically a .22 shell with the end crimped instead of a bullet? Are these the same as "blanks?" Are they also used in starter pistols at the track meet?

They are power charges used for driving hardened nails into concrete and steel. They are rimfire type and come in 22 cal and 27 cal. There are no bullets in the shell, just an explosive charge. Those things are not toys or stuff to carry around in your pocket. They are safe when handled properly but are quite dangerous.

As far as the school expelling the boy, that seems to be the typical knee jerk reaction of uninformed officials with a zero tolerance policy.

Probably THIS ...

I used to build handguns that used these things when I was a kid. It is quite dangerous and can be the real deal if you use a bullet.

Some of the "Cat's Sneeze loads use the various power cartridges in a modified shell casing and a lead shot to produce subsonic loads for normal rifles/pistols.

They can be dangerous when mishandled (or used with intent)

Back in the 50's (grade school)in rural Indiana, we not only carried ammunition but brought hand guns, rifles and shot guns to school. We used to shoot them after school. Nothing was really said as long as you did'nt take them out of your locker until school was over. Of course, some years later, many of us were dodging lead in combat--it was called the draft. life was not very wimpy in those days. Best regards. John--Las Vegas.

They're called Powder Actuated Fasteners. The boy is right; no one was in danger because you have to strike them with a hammer at a precise location for them to go off. The school teacher and school officials are a bunch of idiotic dingbats.

If the kid had a length of 1/4" pipe/tube, and anything from pencil erasers to fishing sinkers, they have probable cause to suspect something fishy.

BTW, when I was a kid (4) I put a .22 shell in a vice end on. Squeezed, and Bang. Kid down the street nearly lost his eye.

They can be quite dangerous to very dangerous.

I'm sure the kid didn't get permission from his parents to bring the charges to school, he just thought it would be cool.

The charges probably should have been taken from him and returned at the end of the day to take back home (perhaps a call to the parents would be in order).

We just taught the kid to make a mountain out of a molehill and he will certainly become a fine member of our litigious society...

When kids get expelled for pointing a finger like a gun during recess, this power load thing seems like China's nuclear arms program in comparison.

Require a gun in every classroom [like a similar plan instituted in Israel], and we would have far less whackos shooting things up in schools.
