American Refining Brad Penn Synthetic

Everyone has heard my Brad-Penn rant.

Everyone on this site goes on about the 'good old days' and the oils they used to use that were 'genuine PA crude'...well, guess what? B-P oils are pretty well nothing but Penn crude, and are basicallty exactly what Pennzoil, QS, Kendall...etc...would be if they were still made with American sourced crude.

I'm suprised half the board doesn't use this stuff!

Wonder where thy are getting their synthetic base stock from?

When was the last time you were there? They added a hydrotreater and did many updates over the past few years. I would disagree on your assessment.

I bet you buy oil made there and don't even know it as they make and bottle several name brand oils there.

I worked as a consultant for them from 1996 to 2000. So it has been a while and a few owners since then. Witco Chemical owned it while I was consulting there. It was just a total mess at that time. However, I realized you can blend oil with little to no flow or temperature controls and it seems to work out just fine. It's all really an art and not a science anyway, or there would be "bad" batches and recalls, which has only happed once Im aware of ever.

And no, Im not using ther oil unless they started blending Mobil 1 or Penziol Ultra products (which I admit is possible).

^^^AGREED!!

With the one exception of a VERY high mileage, CARB/50 state spec car with borderline catcons, where even a minute amount of ZDDP getting past the rings/valve seals could set the dreaded PO420/430 codes.

Here are some additional specs they sent me via email.

-Zinc: 840 ppm
-Calcium: 2110 ppm
-Phosphorous: 760 ppm
-Sodium: 490 ppm
-HT/HS: 3.07 mPa·s

Very responsive company when you ask for info.

Something also to note - this oil 'meets' the Dexos-1 specs, but isn't actually Dexos-1 certified.

I don't know WHY they would bring out a Dexos-1 5W-30 product, and no actually get it certified.
