The headline caught my attention and the story gave me pause for thought. Is this really happening? Can Amazon (or any company) do such a thing morally or legally? This is one of the strangest articles I've read in a very long time.

Essentially, Amazon is banning their drivers from singing along with the radio. Amazon claims such activity causes distracted driving. Gimme a break!

Amazon doesn't have their own delivery drivers. They use contractors like FedEx Ground does and it screws over the drivers on pay and benefits. Amazon basically gets rid of liability and the union threat by using contractors.
They can still dictate policy. I am a contractor at my customers factories, and I must follow every rule they impose - or I will be asked to leave.

I know how it works. Like if the factory requires you to wear a hard hat or a safety visibility vest even though OSHA wouldn't require one where you're working, you must abide by rules set forth by the factory.

Can confirm. Got yelled at by a guy wearing a t-shirt about me wearing a t-shirt at the steel mill… apparently you’re supposed to have long sleeves there, even if it’s 95F out.

It certainly reminds me that some people talk nonstop …
Not a great fit in a crowded office or sleeping in hotels …

~10 years ago my UPS guy was showing me how there's a camera on them. The system also tracks if the vehicle is not moving for more than ten minutes and they're not clocked out on break. Also tracks if they go up and down the same road too many times (possible inefficiency).

There's GPS but it's only to record where the package was scanned delivered. At the time it wouldn't help them with nav at all (this may have changed).

He told me if he handed me a package in town it would get flagged because it wasn't the delivery address, but he also said in rural areas this is expected and his supervisor dismissed it.

Regardless, this level of the Eye of Sauron is why I'm effectively unemployable except for self-employment.

Yeah this is right up there with the companies who track key strokes and mouse movement.
