Alternative for Kohler 12-50-01 (short) oil filter that's common ?

I need these short filters because the steering arm hits the longer Kohler 12-050-02 and the 3614 filters. Fram PH8172 cross references, but I cannot find them locally, and they're $15 on Amazon. Nor the SuperTech 8172, or anything in AC Delco, etc.

Went to O'Reilly's and they cross referenced a Wix filter, but it was $25 after tax.

Lowe's actually had the Genuine Kohler filters, at $20 plus tax.

Anyone else using the short filters, and what are you using ? Something less expensive, I hope. I'm the guy in the family that services everyone's lawnmowers, so I need to replenish my mower oil filter stash.
 
WX57035 is a great alternative…premium filter.
Run it for 2 seasons if your family wants cheap 🥴

The 4967 has the same 3/4-16 threads and the gasket id and od is only a touch smaller but worked for me. It's a half inch shorter than the 3614 most importantly. If it was a half inch or so then try a fram or supertech 4967 on it.

Baldwin B7165. It will clear that steering arm. I have the same issue. Roughly $8 on RockAuto. Yes there's shipping, but bulk order some filters and it equals out to be a good deal.

I would say get the biggest 21micron oil filter that will fit and change it every 2 to 4 years. Change the oil every year if it's nice and black. Definitely change oil every 2 years.
 
I'm choking on some of these prices for the short filters. The EA15K53 does come in at 2.67" which gives you a BIT more room than the 3614/0241 equivalents which are generally about 3.4" tall. If you absolutely MUST have the short filter because the room dictates it, you can get equivalent Briggs 492932 or 892421 filters on Amazon for about $7 to $9 if you buy in multi packs. Yeah, the Amsoil EA15K53 can be had for just a buck more with free shipping (with a large enough order) and it's GOT the bells & whistles like the silicone ADBV, the fully synthetic & wire-backed media & integrated bypass valve. You can also pick up the equivalent (or better) Kawasaki or Briggs & Stratton equivalents for 5-7 bucks less.

That's where I get my Kohler filters . 8 yrs old and doesn't burn a drop . I'll stick with what works .

It's a better deal, but frankly It's only a "good" deal in the context of Kohler OEM filters. There are compatible OEM filters that can be had for less from Kawasaki, Briggs and John Deere. Just got some B&S 842921's myself for 9 bucks each, but the 492932 can be had for about 7 bucks. The Wix 51056 sells on RockAuto for 8.27.

I paid $9.50 each for the Kohler filters with free shipping.

A Rock Auto Wix for $8.27 would cost quite a bit more considering the RA shipping costs.

The B & S you posted are $9 each and the John Deere is $8. Considering how long the oil change interval is on a lawn tractor, I'm not going to lose any sleep over paying $9.50 for a filter compared to $8 or $9.
 
With these filters, the WIX 51348 is ever so slightly longer, and cross references to a ton of different filters that are cheap and readily available. I’ve Purolator, WIX, NAPA Proformer, CarQuest, and they have been in the $3-7.50 range. I have a NAPA Proformer 21348 posted around here somewhere, very good build quality for the price. These mowers don’t really care about the filter, just need to be glued together and have a media that won’t rip apart. I prefer silicone ADBV and gaskets nowadays if you run a filter longer than a season or 50 hours. But honestly, unless you have and engine that is about to blow itself up, these filters could probably run for 4-5 seasons or 250 hrs easily.

I stay clear of Fram and M+H, unless it’s OPE. I’ll still run the red Purolators. I have never and probably will never run Fram, just can’t get over my past disgust of them.
 
Received some Briggs and Stratton 84291 oil filters today from Amazon for 9 bucks each. They're recommended for the Vanguard engines, but will work anywhere you need the short flters for clearance on a Kohler or Kawasaki engine.

I see some things I really like on this filter that I don't think the higher-priced competitors have. Silicone ADBV / Zinc-coated base plate / Integrated bypass valve /

I can't show it with photos from my phone, but it's a metal core with nice sized holes. This looks like it won't be restrictive at all with eight good-sized inlet holes as well.

The gasket has good protrusion and appears it will give a very good seal.

The filter media is rated at 99% for 28 microns.

One down side is they didn't include the boxes. They all came in one bubble-wrapped package, but there's no apparent dents.

I'll probably give you guys a C&P at the end of the mowing season when I use it on a Cub Cadet LT46 with 125 hours on it at present. I anticipate putting about 35-40 hours on it and will use in conjuction with Amsoil Premium Protection 10W-40.

Expecting to find a coil spring and metal endcaps as that is what the B&S 492932 gives you. Will also calculate the surface area of the filtering media, although I don't expect it to be super generous in a filter that's 2.25" tall. Probably still more than fine in a 23-horse motor used for 40 hours tops.
