I see a similar type list for oil filters in the oil filters forum. And, we see lots and lots of "Who makes this or that oil?" posts.

Well, I had compiled this list for my own use, but thought it may help others understand the sometimes confusing links behind Who Makes What Oil. In particular, before I discovered this board, I had no idea that Shell owned both the Quaker State and Pennzoil brands. Also, the "smaller" blenders like Amalie and Warren Oil for example, market oil under a bewildering number of brand names that are often NOT marked with the blender name on the bottle. And....I do not even need to mention the "2 Warrens" confusion!

A few caveats:

1) This is by no means a complete list. But I would be glad to make any additions if I am able to edit this post (which I do not seem to be able to do after a short period of time after posting)

2) There may be errors. I do not profess to be an expert on this. This is simply data that I gathered from various sources like this board, and the API Licensee web site. Again, I would be glad to make corrections as long as I am able to edit my post.

3) Some obvious brands are not listed under their corporate parent. Do people really need to know that ExxonMobil makes Mobil 1, or that BP/Castrol makes Castrol GTX?

4) Things can and will change. Companies buy other companies and companies merge. And Walmart picks new suppliers...what, every week?! So this info may change over time, just like the data on the oil filter maker list in that forum.

Anyway, here we go! I hope it helps some people (and maybe even eliminates the monthly Who Makes Advance Auto's oil post!)

American Refining Group

Brad-Penn oils
Gulf oils
various private labels

I sent them an email asking if that were allowed to list what their oils are sold under.

Esso/Imperial Oil (Canada) XD-3 = President's Choice 15W-40
Esso/Imperial Oil (Canada) Protec = President's Choice 5W-30, 10W-30

I thought Harley-Davidson was made by Sunoco. It has been a few years since I have heard this though. Also, I seem to believe that Mopar is Mobil but guys at work argue Mopar is Conoco. They seem to get really ****** when we discuss this.

Thanks for the work and the post. I really like lists like this. I can never keep up with who makes what. It would be cool to have a segmented area here on BiTOG with such a list or lists, with babysitting updates as required.

I completely agree that we could really use a quick reference section. I would even like to see PDSs archived by date.

Thanks for your efforts.

I wish that the moderators would allow miraCRD to edit his original post for a longer period, so that follow-up posts could be added to his list (it's so nice and pretty!).

Me too to the above comment!!

Also, I appreciate all of your feedback and kind words. It really didn't take as long as it looks like it did....plus I am really fast on the computer!
