I have wondered if it would be more economical to run a dino, say pyb for 5k then a syn like plat, ultra or m1 for 10k. Alternating the dino and syn for economy and internal cleanliness. Thoughts?

I believe you have too much time on your hands! Different chemistry in theory should clean "deposits" that are either left behind or not cleaned but at the intervals you just recommended your engine should remain clean.

It doesn't make any different in term of cleanliness. I had been using dino/syn in my LS400 for more than 14-15 years, whatever type I had in my stash I used it, I double the OCI with syn too.

Alternating does sound like a good plan(but you won't save money unless one of your choices is actually free.)

Over time you will have made a comparative study and you may find one oil change performs better than the other.

Sounds good to me. If cost is a concern, staying dino and adding 8 oz MMO (2oz per qt) as topoff the last 1k of every oil change is a good option.

Alternating doesn't really make your engine happier... and as a money saver... not likely... unless you're a super bargain hunter. My goal is 2.50 or less a quart...

Because I'm a bargain hunter, my plans usually involve Conventional in spring-fall, and synthetic in the winter... just in case it's too darn cold to crawl under the car... I have lots of WPP and Wolfs Head Conventional and SynBlend on the shelf, along with some Amsoil slated for this winter.

I'm certainly not your average BITOG guy searching for the "Uber" oil... since I know my car will rust to bits long before the engine calls it quits. Thus, I round up whatever up to spec oils I can get at a major discount, and pour it in with confidence that the engine will keep on rolling.

Seriously? I've gone 150K on conventional and have had no dirt/sludge/varnish issues whatsoever. It's all about the interval my friend.

Synthetic oil is made in a lab, not in heaven. Conventional oil was made in a lab too... with components taken from the earth... again, it's not blessed by the almighty.

If the motor is clean, run a full OCI interval... if it's not, run shorter intervals with a quality oil... it does clean up.

Just DRIVE THAT THING!
