I found an old 3614 FRAM by allied signal, I was wondering how this compares to modern day honeywell made FRAMs?

The quality of it looks better, the paint is uniform, and it looks just better made but does it suffer the card board end caps?

Didn't someone recently post photos of a cut open ph3614 from 1988 that looked very similar to a present day Fram even to the cardboard end caps. And wasn't that the time period when Fram was rated the best by Consumer Reports and just about everyone else? I know I used plenty of them. Used to get them on sale 2 for $5.00 at Caldors when they were still in business.

I just cut apart a 3614 from Allied Signal. Pictures are in photo section. It has cardboard if that concerns you.

The media wasn't crumbly though, so I'm going to use the rest from that batch, albeit in the summer (light duty).

If you don't have the original store receipt, honeywell might give you a hard time on the "no defects" warranty if the filter blows up. While they might not admit a shelf life they could try to weasel out. Their warranty probably covers "the original retail purchaser". Just something I'm considering on my yard sale frams...

this is from 1994...i dont think anyone would have the reciept for it.

the construction of it looks much more uniform, the paint is even and not speckled like the new FRAMS and the inside tube...well it's uncrimpled and looks thin...but the oil passage holes are huge (2mm)

The ADBVs are possibly worse. I've seen some with a spring that might help seeling, but the entire design still allows bypassing of the element.

im going to ride out my current purolator for another 6000 miles (for a total of 7500 miles) and run this old fram for the remaining 1500-2000 miles.
