I can sign on with my computer 24 hours before the flight. Does it make any difference whether I sign on one second after the 24 hour mark or one hour? Thanks so much from those who fly frequently. Ed

If you're talking about Southwest, I think so. Traveled recently, and on the outgoing trip, I checked in as soon as I could, got in the B boarding group. On the way back, I was having issues with Verizon, and was delayed by a half hour or so before I could check in on my phone, got into group C.

I don't fly Southwest. It makes a difference if you wait to choose a seat or want to change. Only because others are choosing seats while we goof off.

Well for American Airlines...nope...does not matter

The sooner you are able to obtain your assigned boarding group (approx 24 hrs in advance of departure), the better chance your position in line will get you a reasonably desirable seat. Waiting to obtain a boarding group assignment puts you further back in the boarding line so you board later and have a lesser choice of seats available. Business Select seating is an exception to this rule and costs more.

From Southwest's website:

  • General boarding

We have a quick, easy, and efficient boarding process. Look at your boarding pass to find your assigned boarding group (A, B, or C) and boarding position (1 - 60). When your group is called, stand by the column with your number on it until it’s your turn to board.

  • With Business Select®, you’re always a line leader

If you want a guaranteed A1-A15 boarding position, be sure to purchase a Business Select® fare.

If you're not 6'+, it won't matter. For those of us 6'+, it can be the difference between jammed knees or actual legroom.

Personally, for SWA, I wait 24 hrs + 3 sec.
I almost always get an aisle seat within the first 12 rows.

Be aware that after you push your ENTER key at 24 + 3, you'll have to confirm one more thing before ENTER once again. Good luck on your seat assignment BINGO.

I used to do this, one time I forgot and got stuck with C boarding and stuck in a middle seat. Now I just pay for early bird check in.

Ya got that right! They cram you in like sardines on Southwest's planes, on pretty much every seat (except for the escape seats).

I was like A6 one day. Was 20th to board. A guy like 5’7 in front of me as we walk towards middle and exit row. I see the exit row seat is empty in front and my eyes light up. As we get to the row, the piece of **** goes, “oh wow, look at that legroom, man! Wahoo!” and almost runs to the seat. There was a FA about 5 rows in front of us watching and he saw the joy and happiness leak out of my face with the hatred and burning heat of a 1,000 suns. He gave me one of those little lip purses like, “I understand completely and I’m actually legitimately sorry for once but he got there first…….:(
I stood there and stared at the guy for like 20 seconds before putting my carryon into the overhead bin and took an aisle seat across the way. And people wonder why I hate other people in general.

I am flying SouthWest and I don't pre purchase a seat. Chris M. seems to state that I should log on ASAP and JayhalkRoy say yes also. I will have my finger on the Enter key at 24 hours. + 1 second. Thank you. Ed
Yes - Log on at the first possible second. By the first minute, many of the positions in the cattle call boarding process will be gone.

You'll line up by group - then it's a free-for-all to get a seat. The closer you are to the front of the herd group - the better your options will be when you board.

Some people love it.

I think it's horrible, personally, like opening morning at a Wal-mart on Black Friday, with the same clientele, in fact...

Still, some folks love it.

there used to be a service that would check you in automatically for southwest exactly at 24 hours but they did away with that, i'm sure SWA didn't like them avoiding purchasing their "early bird" paid service.

I refuse to fly Cattle Car (Southwest) Airlines.
