Looking to get a few home air purifiers. I’ve been researching and getting confused. Can you shed any light on this subject?

Had one with HEPA filter. Cost of replacement filters was really bad. Look into long term maintenance costs before you decide.

Ditto what Johnny G said. Get one with a cleanable, reusable filter. I run mine for at least a year. If you have pets they are worth the money to keep the house clean from dog/cat dander.

The first ones I ever bought were used once. When I saw the cost of the filters we just stuck them in a closet somewhere. How can filters cost almost as much as a whole new unit? The ones we use now I cut washable furnace filters and put in them instead of buying new filters.

I guess it depends on what you are trying to filter.
you could duct tape a mirv 16 filter to a box fan ;)
That’s what I am finding out. The trade off between how much clean air is produced vs how much particulate is removed. Hepa filter produce almost perfect clean air but not much of it. MERV 13 produces more air that is not as clean but has taken out much more particles.

Depends. I have a hepa filter with a pretty big filter and motor (100w to160w) and it filters alot of air.

FYI, a MERV-17 filter is a HEPA filter.

The box fan idea noted above is a well tested method of cleaning air. One experimenter used MERV-13 filters, a box fan and a small ionizer module. Matching HEPA filter performance easily.

The 5 sided square filter idea is how we filter incoming air for aircraft hangar AC. Lots of filter area, little restriction. Air handler dumps air directly into the hangar, no ducts.

Also note, some filter panels are MERV-11 or so, but have an electrostatic charge, greatly improving performance on small particles as long as the charge lasts (generally until the filter gets dirty)

We have two Coway Airmega hepa units, one in the family room, one in the bedroom. I did my research and they were highly rated. We run them 24/7 on low during the winter months only. They have eliminated my wife's chronic indoor winter cough.

They are not cheap but if you want the absolute best for filtration performance get a Filter Queen Defender. HEPA is better than nothing but it is something more like brand association, "oh it's a HEPA filter, those are popular so those must be good right?" HEPA doesn't really compare in terms of filtration performance versus filter queen.

People on this site are all about buying the best filtration products for their cars but do they actually want to pay the price when it comes to what they breathe in every second?

One of my issues is “aesthetics”. My wife’s definition of “aesthetics”.

I use Winix U450s and a U300 but they don't make those models anymore. Check out Costco if you have a membership. They have Winix and a few other brands.

We have one as well, I just wish medium speed was a bit more because it's almost nothing, slightly more than almost nothing, then it's ALL THE AIR!!! But ours doubles as a white noise machine.

My daughter runs 2 of these and another PURE brand, for her 3D printing business. She has 10 3D printers and 3 hepa units They all run 24/7 and I have a $350 particulate counter to check if she and I have clean air as I have one too for my printer. She and I have had great luck with the filter lasting a LONG time. The change the filter is just a timer and we just keep resetting it as she still has good flow. It has a carbon prefilter we let "cake" and only do a light cleaning once a year of that filter. I do a very light reverse flow air blow of the hepa filter every year as not to damage it. 3 years going strong, same filter. She talked about buying a new filters on year 4.
