Air no show

I've posted about the Dayton airshow before, and how it was too pricey and held on what's usually the hotest weekend of the year. This year because of the federal budget cuts there's no military flight team demonstration. So what was I paying $20+ admission and $10 parking for if the military which was most of the show was being funded with taxes lol?

I'm glad I didn't buy a ticket in advance earlier this year before the budget cuts. I could still enjoy it without the Thunderbirds/Blue Angels demonstration but much of the military static displays and military personel won't be present either, and not at those prices.

I guess because they don't have to have the airshow when the demonstration team is available they are having it this weekend 2-3 weeks earlier. Wouldn't you know it, this weekend is going to be very hot and sunny. But nothing like 100+ heat of last time.

So no airshow for me

No money for the military to make an appearance at an long-standing air show, but someone is taking an expedition to Africa at the cost of between $60 and $100 million.

At least they're still going to have the airshow around here. I guess if you want at least some airshow, you got to pay for it yourself (again).

funny how folks are for "less government"--except for stuff they like...

I always viewed it as a huge boondoggle, though I know many folks enjoy it. Personally, I'm pretty stoked. I'm in the direct flight path for the Blue Angels' Seafair show, and my oldest dog would be a trebling mess for the entire week from the noise. Sorry, but good riddance as far as I'm concerned.

I like the smaller airshows that don't feature military participation, instead you get a bunch of Commemorative Air Force guys flying around in mostly old WWII planes, fun stuff! Real engines are round!

At this airshow they always had some WWII era planes and reenactments, and some private stunt flyers. I like those piston-engine propeller planes too. Then the military flight team flew last.

They're going to have more old school planes and jets this time without the military demonstration team.

I like just the solo jet demonstrations like the Superhornet almost as good as anything. It focuses on more up close just what all the jet can do.

Military air shows were good for recruitment and showing the taxpayers what their money is being spent on. Money well spent IMO.
A 100 million dollar jaunt to Africa on taxpayer funds is beyond shameful its a downright disgrace.

. I don't recall their names but I probably seen their wing walk performance several times in the past. This year's air show is just cursed. I'm glad I didn't go this year.

Certainly you've lived in the Seattle area long enough to know that this activity has been going on for many decades, true? So why did you move there? Not to be a jerk....but one can always move, as they WILL return again. I have two dogs that freak out every 4th of July. Now THAT is a horrid, loud, and awful holiday, and no matter where I would move to the situation would be the same. My dogs must be tranquilized and watched the day before and the day after the 4th. The idiots never stop blowing them off as required by law....and the police do ZERO about it. The Blue Angels? Not even close.

When I bought my house near Lake Union 15 years ago, I had zero thoughts of ever owning a dog. I was afraid of dogs my whole life. Then, about 12 years ago my wife and I walked out for dinner, and this giant Newfie started following us. It looked like a horse! I thought it was going to kill me, and then eat me--since given his size I assumed he was always really hungry. He ended up following us home and never left (it was a long sad story of an elderly owner who could no longer care for him. We took in the dog and would take him over for visits). After that, I was hooked. I also had no idea what an issue is was for dogs, because this guy was almost completely deaf when he followed us home. It's cool though, if/when it comes back, I'll deal. I still think it's a boondoggle, though....

I hear ya on that one. I've tried all sorts of strategies for that one, and sadly fireworks go on all week around here as well. This year, I'm going mountain biking in the North Cascades over the holiday. I rented a cabin way out in the middle of the fire zone specifically to get the dogs out of town during the fireworks thing. I think they'd put people in jail for setting off fireworks out there given the conditions.

Weird thing of note: while gunshots and fireworks may sound similar to humans, they sound nothing alike to dogs. I regularly walk my dogs on a hiking trail that backs up to a gun range; zero reaction. Tiny firecracker 6 blocks away and the 2 old dogs are a quivering mess. Go figure.

I tried to find a vacation cabin to hide out in with our dogs for the holiday. Huge cost, pet restrictions, and availability all combined to make it next to impossible. I think if they would just get rid of the fireworks completely and only have organized and privately funded shows in designated areas the holiday would be a whole lot more enjoyable for all. But I'm sure many so called 'patriotic' types think I'm anti-American and a boring old doofus for having that opinion. Oh well, I don't care. I just don't appreciate loud explosions and idiots drinking gallons of beer and screaming like morons all night.
