My parents' 1964 Buick had an oiled foam air filter. Aside from the theoretical efficiency of that type, it was defective, in that the seam in the foam soon split, leaving a big hole to welcome airborne dirt. My father sewed it back together.

Oil bath air cleaners, which my parents had on other vehicles, were very messy and tedious to clean.

Yeah a primitive design but they worked well for the technology of the day.
I suspect our air was a lot cleaner back then LOL.

I remember dad used to overfill his oil bath air cleaners and let the seek their own level, said it was much more precise. When he floored it, there was a nice smoke screen. Enough that I retrofitted one of my cars with oil feed into the muffler from a tiny windshield washer pump.

Dad bought the machine today. We're having issue finding some rear rims, but I can post pics for those interested.

She needs a bath.

Land Rover used them in the Series until that model's end in the early 80's I believe. My '72 has one. I use basic, straight 30w and cleaning the mesh and changing the oil is simple but messy.
