No Brian, some people do it on Purpose. Another thing is people like my former brother in law who can't stand anyone in front of him regardless of how fast above the speed limit they are going, it is just the idea of them being in ahead of him that drives him crazy.

Some people do it on purpose as Cycle Freak states, but most are just victims of evolution. They are driving with their fish brains (the schooling instinct runs strong).

w/ regard to high speed in a straight line--it is puzzling. the interstates/roads around here are nothing close to straight with ramps and turns. i will pass these people through the turns only to have these people blow by me at 70 mph on the straights only to have to pass them again the next time there is a curve. further my speed isnt changing.

I have to laugh at some people, Its about 4 miles From my house to my job and 6 traffic lights in between with 4 of the lights in view of each other. You get the same people on the road every morning and afternoon going and returning from work. Me a hot cup of coffee listening to the radio doing the speed limit.Having traveled this stretch of road for a number of years 99% of the time I can adjust my speed to not having to stop at the red lights. The other drivers whom have shared the same stretch of road at the same time all race to the next light and have to stop for the red. I keep my pace and most of the time I end up passing them and getting to my destination quicker then they do as I can see them going by when I pull into the lot. In a hurry to get somewhere but not getting there any faster.

People don't get so aggressive when walking along the sidewalk, or even piled onto a bus. There must be a way to get people back to the same mindset as in a crowd, without the expensive metal separating us from eachother.

I've determined that this is, in many cases, conditioning, Brian. When I owned my BMW ..I effortlessly weaved in and out of rolling baracades that were stalled like two static lines progressing forward. Now, after owning a string of far less powerful or responsive rides, I "plan" my passing assaults and precalculate the futility of some attempts. Now I'll sit to the right except to pass out of habit ..but I don't think most of our current drivers were raised with this habit.
There are also those who cannot, or choose not to, cope with merging traffic. You see them in the center lane of the Jersey pike 24/7 ..they even do it in the area where trucks are prohibitted from using the left lane. As we age, we too are not going to rely on our quick thinking and lightning reflexes ..and opt for the numb security of not being there to begin with
In rush hour traffic ...the basic format that I've observed is that the entire roadway goes as fast as possible based on traffic density. The one or two law abiding drivers disrupt the flow to a tremendous degree.
I'm so glad that all my instances with high intensity traffic are receational at this point. Even in what one would consider light traffic times ..the typical two lane is elevated to "stressful". Where the convergence of super citizen, short trip commuter, and long distance commuter force all three into intersecting vectors. Where none can flow without interfering with the other in some manner. This is when you see the passing lane semi full with varying amounts of traffic escaping back into the left lane for sanctuary ..add even light merging traffic ..
Speaking of lane discipline I often find that on a 3 lane highway I can make faster progress in the right lane. Everyone is congregated in the left twolanes and I have the right lane virtually to myself and only go to the left to avoid a merger or to pass a slower vehecle. Or when I find folks following the posted signs that state "LEFT LANE FOR PASSING ONLY" Traffic flows much smoother.. but that's rare and I have to be planning way ahead on what moves I plan to make if there are rolling road blocks.

I notice the opposite problem. The drivers I get stuck behind on my way to work drive 5 to 10MPH under the speed limit which ensures that we get stopped at a lot more red lights (they are synchronized for traffic that moves at or slightly above the speed limit) than if those LANE COMMANDERS in front would move right and let others pass so they can drive at the speed limit.

The other day, I was in my 05 Mustang GT and was on my way to a golf turny. It was raining pretty hard when I came to a stoplight just before going over a bridge near the Delta. As I stopped for the light, some guy pulls up next to me with early ninties IROC and starts gunning his engine, wanting to race to the single lane for the bridge. When the light turned green, without any trouble at all, I pulled ahead and left him sitting and spinning his tires. The guy couldn't believe it. He followed me into the McDonalds parking lot and wanted to know what kind of mods I had on my car. I simply replied "Traction Control". I have not laughed that hard in a long time.
I think most of them consider it a job well-done if they get from point A to B without getting into a wreck or getting any tickets.
Case in point: Driver enters the Costco gas station the wrong way (against multiple arrows and DO NOT ENTER signs). Attendent tells the driver that they need to enter the correct way. Driver says, "Well I didn't cause an accident did I".
I guess if the best you can say about how you drive is that "at least I didn't cause an accident"...well...that's just sad.

Here is a thread I found on the kid ricer-oriented Club RSX Forum about people's friends killed in car crashes. It's sheer volume speaks volumes. Pretty much full of horror stories, but a must-read nevertheless. Not for the sensitive faint-hearted.

Yep, I never quite figured out how so many could subscribe to the "Well, I pulled it off, didn't I?" as though that was some badge of validation or merit.
It's somewhere slightly above someone pulling something lame and having them rationalize it by saying, "Well, he didn't say anything

heres a good one from yesterday.... driving back from san diego, going through los angeles... the typical 5 accident stop-n-go for 45 miles, i maintain a safe following distance of 5 car lengths because i just dont like the idea of slamming on my brakes at the last second just to be up someone's butt and be that 4 car lengths closer to my destination... EVERYONE was up someone else's butt, and some guy drives along side me as we are going a whole 12 mph and yells "hey get off the freeway" then he slams his brakes on becase he was following too closely.... los angeles....please break off into the ocean and sink already.
