Crazy Driver Rant

Some days I'm just amazed at the risks drivers take, and how nonchalant they are about the safety of other drivers.

Case in point. My morning commute has an onramp that merges into a major 6 lane highway. It's a short onramp and uphill, so you have to really get into it to get up to highway speed so you can easily merge. Its also one of those onramps where you have two lanes with a stoplight for each lane, and the the green lights alternate for each lane. The right lane merges into the left before you hit the highway.

I'm in the left lane and take off when my light turns green. The guy next to me takes off at the same time while his light was red. I think he thought he was going to hammer on it and pass me on the right, ala the red light stops where someone pulls up in the parking lane and tries to do a pass on the right. He was 50ish, not even a teenager trying to show off.

He failed. I think the hill and short distance was more than his car could make up. But instead of throwing the white flag, he simply started moving over into my lane while we were side by side. I've got 3 lanes of traffic doing 65 on my left, and an idiot moving into me on my right. He got really close - I slam on the brakes and he goes around.

I know it's a minor thing, but now that I'm hauling around a child I get more angry when people take risks that impact my safety. Worst case scenario, we could have touched and he could have spun me out into the traffic. In a better scenario(at least for me), my truck would have ridden his car right into the concrete guardrail.

Thanks for letting me rant, I feel better now. If you want to take risks with your own life, fine. But don't involve me and my kid.

I don't get it either. Life is just too short to take unnecessary risks on the highway.

A few months ago, an entire family was killed on a highway near me because another driver missed his exit and then tried to use one of the police turn around points in the median. He slowed down too fast and the car behind him couldn't stop in time, knocking his car into the oncoming traffic. A vehicle with a mom, dad and two kids then hit this car going over 70 mph head on.

It was a pointless, terrible tragedy and the crosses and huge segment of burnt asphalt stand as a reminder. An entire family was killed because somebody couldn't drive just 3 more miles to an exit and then turn around there.

I had someone do something similar when I was getting on the highway. Right lane merged into left and I gunned it to get up to speed in order to merge with traffic (I was in the left lane with nobody behind me). A Civic tried to pass me on the right and ended up slamming on the brakes to get behind me because they were steadily falling behind and running out of road.

I don't play around. I may sound like a jerk and I could have slammed on the brakes myself and let him fly by me. But, why should I have to inconvenience myself when I am following the rules of the road? If I'm obeying the law and someone wants to run into me, the more power to them. I hope they are willing to pay though.

P.S. I don't have any kids (knock on wood) and I was by myself.

This is what really upsets me. 3 miles. 3 minutes on a freeway. People died to save 3 minutes.

I c this stupid thing everyday out here, Im on the road at least 6k to 8k month. My biggest gripe is the folks cutting u off to get over to an exit lane in the last second,,whyyyyy. the cemetery is full of ( in to big a hurry idiots) amen.

People are impatient these days. And do not respect other people's space.

The problem is the other driver could argue that you hit him/her. It's a real hassle to involve the insurance company and time to have your car repaired. Reckless diving is a lose lose situation for everyone.

They could try, but logically if I am in the lane that is the one that they are required to merge into, the blame would typically point to them. I have no reason to try and get into the lane that is merging, so why would I attempt to do that?

I see your point though. They could try and say I swerved or something. Best case scenario would be that someone was around to witness it.

I've seen that too, and I frequently see people using the police turnarounds despite the "Emergency or Authorized Vehicles Only" sign.

To add to the level of how stupid and ignorant people are, how about the ones I've seen reading newspapers spread out on the steering wheel, the ones feeding their kids in the back seat, and the ones putting nail polish on their TOES with the leg propped up on the steering wheel (Yes! I have seen it!). I just get far away from those folks.

Yeah, I've had lots of people pass me on the shoulder, or cut across the white-striped area when getting onto the freeway. Then I have to watch out for them when I do my legal merge. IIRC, NY has a law where the person merging has the right of way, and other traffic has to yield to them. When I slow down a few mph to let somebody else safely merge, the fingers/high beams/horns start. As if me slowing from 55 mph to 50 mph to let somebody on is going to ruin their day.

This drives me off the wall, along with people who don't use their turn signals.

Amen.

I just spent a week in California and I could not believe stupid motorcyclists down there. Traffic on I-405 was going 40 mph, and they were flying at 80+mph between COLUMNS of cars, making a 10-lane highway into 12-lane, cutting cars off and going from the inside to to the outside lanes. Add the fact that it must be illegal to use turn signals in California (I was the only one using them to signal a lane change or a turn, as far I could see) and I can see them slamming into a car very easily. I just hope when they do, they would be the only ones to die and not passengers/drivers in the cars that they hit. Where was CHP when you needed them?

Virtually NO ONE drives well were I live. I should mount a dash cam and make movies of some of stunts I witness daily. I would love to ride and commute on a sportbike in the Fall, but, given the % of distracted drivers on the road and the over burdened highways - no way Jay.

1 Peeve:
You shouldnt brake on the highway unless you are exiting or there is a major general slowdown. If you are braking - you are driving improperly - most likely following too close. ( Optionally, you are a scared ninny and shouldn't be on the interstate to begin with ...)

+100

2 Peeve:

Dont use the far-left passing lane as a moderate speed travel lane. This despicable practice is called "left-lane bandit". Now when someone travelling faster from your 6 wishes to pass - pull over and let them pass. This isnt an "I'm in front of you and I win, I just deputised myself highway Cop and tough luck buddy" game. You jam on your brake and I'm behind you going 75 in my 3/4 tonne work truck with the welded steel pusher bumper - play that game and I will turn you and YOU will be in the median weeds with you dirty laundery flying out the window as you roll.
