i finally decided to add an aftermarket backup camera to my 2013 vw passat s. the radio is just that, a radio, no screen at all. i can’t do it myself, just not going there. so, i will look for a decent local car electronics shop. what do i need to know so i don’t sound like a complete schmuck when i make the order? hopefully one of you kind fellows has already plowed this field, with a vw no less...

I pieced together one and put it in a truck a few years back. The components are pretty standard. The camera will need 12v power and have a phono plug signal output (think yellow plug on back of vcr). The screen will be the same, a 12v powered lcd with a phono plug input. You can bench test the whole thing on a work bench. Typically you wire camera power into the reverse lights and send the signal wire into the dash to feed the screen. You could send the power wire with it so the screen was only on with the camera. The whole thing cost me $30 or so on amazon. Wired, not wireless. this way you can choose your camera and choose your screen.

If it was my car, I would go with OEM components. A nav radio with display screen on Ebay is around $100 https://www.ebay.com/itm/224330690404?fits=Model:passat&hash=item343b26af64:g:Kk0AAOSw6zlgPV43&LH_ItemCondition=4 Plus another $75 for the camera https://www.ebay.com/itm/234162760931?hash=item3685302ce3:g:ypUAAOSwmTRhKr6A&LH_ItemCondition=4 I assume the car is pre-wired so it should be plug and play. I did just this on a Nissan. https://bobistheoilguy.com/forums/t...-camera-retrofitted-into-nissan-versa.344962/

thank you very much meep and atikovi! i am hoping to hear from someone who has had a backup camera kit installed by a shop, not diy...

For the sake of keeping things simple and having a warranty, since you prefer that a shop do it, I would pick the shop first and see what they carry. I'd rather them install something they are familiar with and have a way to warranty.

Look for a place that has a good reputation obviously, but depending on how things are in your area, I'd be prepared to wait a couple weeks before they can get you in.

Here in Birmingham, AL, that shop is a place called Rickwood Radio. They have been around more than 50 years.
