Although I do not believe cotton gauze filters are as effective overall as a quality oiled paper, they do flow well. So I use them on cars where performance is the overall objective, and OCI's and oil filtration are often and excellent, respectively. I use one in the excellent factory airbox in my Honda S2000 - the AFE even had the little "wiener" that aligns/stabilizes the filter in the airbox - a nice design feature of the OE design - but in fairness, also provided by K&N.
I liked the quality and construction details of AFE filters - they are not cheap, but compared to the K&N's I have examined, they are much better made, make better seals, and the filter medium and number of pleats superior. IMO, they look tough too.
Anyway, something to consider as an alternative to the K&N onslaught.
