He favours driving dynamics and so generally leans toward Euro cars. It isn't exclusive to BMW, I've seen he say favourable things about Audi and Mercedes as well, perhaps other marques.

I generally agree with his sentiment. A CRV with leather and navigation isn't a luxury vehicle any more than a 328i with "///M" badges on it is an M3.

I gave example of vehicle I own which in that model line up is apparently top model, as example how one cannot make a pie out of [censored], yet he takes it as attack on his purchase. If one thinks that vehicle they bought is a luxury vehicle, it is fine. But they are not the one buying it in this case.
It immediately turns into: who are you to question my purchase, because if I bought Santa Fe, it has to be, in this case, a luxury vehicle.
Hyundai sells OK vehicles, and they are that, OK. I highly doubt anyone at Hyundai thinks any Santa Fe trim is luxury vehicle. Otherwise Hyundai would not try to bend backward to develop Genesis, which in 20 years might become luxury vehicle.

Well, let's just say I don't measure my manhood by the emblem on my vehicle, or if I wear an overpriced Rolex on my wrist, or the size of my house. I guess others have too. Good luck in your quest.

So if someone likes something different or apparently more expensive than your tastes, you belittle them by questioning their "manhood"? The irony.

Because my choice/suggestion of a Hyundai wasn't belittled, right? I don't give a rat's butt what anyone drives. Just don't belittle someone for what they like. Savy?

You did the same thing you're complaining about, hence the irony.

You seriously have a hard time understanding what is a luxury vehicle. better leather or some plastic in some models does not mean luxury.
Take for example Lexus. Toyota has enough platforms to share between Toyota and Lexus, and it does in certain cases, like let's say ES (Camry) or RX (Highlander). However, take into consideration IS, GS and LS. Those are first and foremost longitudinal engines. There is much more emphasis on dynamic, not because potential owner will cut corners with LS, but because longitudinal position offers much better tracking on any type of the road. Also, longitudinal position offers more options how to distribute weight. Look brakes on those cars, suppliers of those components etc. Take a look for example KIA Stinger. There was a famous case of Hyundai paying huge amount of money to one of the lead engineers of BMW M division few years back. Result? KIA Stinger and greatly improved suspension on regular Hyundai's (now one engineer cannot take institutional knowledge with him, but can improve stuff).
OP asked for opinion about certain vehicles. There is only one luxury vehicle there, and that is Mercedes GLE.

Have you driven one lately? They've been getting better lately. Even older problem prone models sometimes are fine. I haven't spent much more than 2k on my E350 over the last 4 years.

If it's under factory warranty, you can either get an extended warranty up to 7/100k, those are usually in the $2-3k range. Or if it's CPO, it's up to 7 years unlimited miles, about the same price on the warranty.

They also sell pre-paid maintenance service packages. Those are worth it if you need B service plus either a transmission flush or spark plugs. Those are included in the package so people might say they end up with a quote that close to $1k for a B service plus a transmission flush but the 3 service pack might be $1200 and includes the transmission flush.

My friends 10 year old Santa Fe just got slapped wit $700 for spark plugs. I told him, if you had MB, BMW or Audi it would be maximum $150.

Depends on the car, same issue with the M276, that's their direct injection engine. The previous engine, the M272 was pretty simple to change and probably in the $150 range. The M276 went to a 60 degree block instead of 90 so you had to remove the intake manifold in order to get to the spark plugs so that jacked the price up to $600 to replace the plugs. But if you got the pre-paid maintenance package, they would have changed the plugs as part of the package. So while the 3 pack might have been $1200, it would probably be just a little bit more than one service with the spark plug change.

That seems awfully low, at least for my area. I don't think any shop aroud here would do it for this little on my 530i, although I know it's not a difficult job as I have DIY'd it before.

I am giving approximate since on these transverse V6 engines it is a lot of labor.

Think I may of found my next SUV. I know I was looking for a pre owned luxury vehicle. But the new just released Honda Passport has caught my eye. Was looking at some new Honda Pilots at the auto show. They're quite nice but a little too soccer mom for me. Plus I don't really need three rows.

The new Passport appears to be a little more sporty looking Pilot without the third row. Plus I like the 3.5 V6 that I'm sure hauls [censored] when you step on it!

Google 2019 Honda Passport if you want to check them out. Even the base model comes with all LED lighting front and rear.

Make sure issues around ZF9 transmission are resolved.
I drove new Pilot when I was searching for family hauler, and while 3.5 has great number on paper, my butt dyno was disappointed.

I'll take the SF over any BMW.

I suspect it's a combination of many things and not easily pinned down. Either way, it's probably best to just assume that rod bearings are a maintenance item every 60k-100k miles, and use oil analysis regularly to try to get some advance warning of excess wear.

Right. Gotta do UOA on an overpriced M Bimmer to prevent killing an engine, and that is considered luxury. LOL. Fools and their money.....

Didn't cherry pick anything. Seems to be SOP with BMW Ms....LOL.

Look at the x5 the Benz has nothing on it.
OWED both and there is no comparison.
If you want vanilla get the Lexus.
