advice on de-mothballing my waverunner

for various life reasons, my yamaha waverunner has been sitting completely idle and neglected for 3 years.

the ski is currently at our beach house, and i just havent had the time for it in the last few years. i honesty, i dont even remember what model it is, i know it's a 2-stroke, 3 seater, 1200cc. i bought it used several years ago, and just had a blast with it, it was a great ski when i was using it regularly.

when i ended the last season i used it, i did winterize it. filled the tank with gas (it has dual tanks, one for gas, one 2-stroke oil, and oil injection). stabil in the gas tank, and fogged the cylinders. marine antifreeze in the engine. it sits outdoors on a trailer with a canvas cover over it.

i'm pretty sure i'm going to need to somehow drain the gas tank, and pour some type of oil into the cylinders, get some fresh gas, and a new battery before i start her up.

any suggestions to breath some life back into my 1200?? i dont want to gunk up the carbs if i havent already.

I`d just syphon out the gas as best as your could, then refill the tank with gas and some Red Line Complete fuel system cleaner.

I`d syphon out the premix tank as best as you could as well, and add fresh 2T premix oil.

Check the battery with a multimeter, it may be salvageable but likely not.

You did good by Winterizing it. I don`t think you will have ANY issues at all.

If you could pop out the plug and spray some WD 40 in there before cranking it up that may make you feel better too.

Try and charge the battery at 2 to 4 amp. When done, wait 24 hours and measure voltage. That will indicate if it accepted a full charge.

I agree to siphon old gas.

If you are using E10 gas that should clean it in a tank or two. Also consider blue Stabil, it has a lot of cleaners in it. 2X the dose, that is mentioned to clean. Carry at least 1 spare fuel filter.

Squirt almost any lubricant down spark plug holes and tap the starter.

Look various places for mice nests.

Do these things have plastic fuel tanks?

I'd be tempted to leave the oil injection alone, not draining that tank, but I'd try to verify that it works somehow. Take the plug out, send it to WOT, crank, and see if oil comes out? Also tempting to put a dash of 2-stroke oil in your first tank of regular gas.

If you jump start it, do it from a NOT RUNNING vehicle. Their simple voltage regulators turn anything over 13.x volts into heat and burn out.

re: battery -

the beach house it's located at is on the Jersey shore, and the house was completely flooded during hurrican Sandy. the battery went under salt water, and i just threw it out, so - new battery coming.

the ski itself, my neighbors confirm was floating in the back yard with the trailer attached during the storm! if not for the chain attaching the trailer to the fence in the back yard, it would have likely floated away!

I hope you recycled it. Its got lead in it.

Well I guess with the gas lines that formed after Sandy you're lucky you didn't have your waverunner gas cap pried in two by marauding hordes.

yes, recycled. the town as pretty good about setting up collections for various haz waste and recyclables.

BE EXTREMELY CAUTIOUS at start up.

Most of the two strokers and some 4 cycles have roller bearings in them. If these get so much as a speck of rust they can quickly fail.

Perhaps some careful fogging with storage oil while just cranking it over for a while. The smallest of specks of rust can ruin your day quickly.

My boat set just like your waverunner for three years. Scared to death what all would be wrong with it, so I said to heck with it....charged the battery, put it on muffs, and cranked it up.....and after about 30 sces of cranking, BAM....it ran. This is with a 2 bbl. carbuerator. If you have fuel injection, I'd be willing to bet that it will fire right up. Pop the gas cap and take a whiff if the gas. If it smells like varnish....then siphon the gas out....if not....GO FOR IT. That engine being a two stroke, I wouldn't even worry about piston/rings, it's already got a coat of oil on it.

You could try and syphon as much gas out as you can... oil too... refill if you have to... Maybe little 2 stroke in the gas... have new plugs ready... Crank it up... easy... Run it, change plugs when you can... Stabil, startron etc... every fill up... I would mention my favorite, Seafoam, but that is not well liked here...

Its hard for one product like Seafoam to do so many things well. Blue Stabil and Startron are only designed for stabilizing gas, maybe a little cleaning. I would stick with them.

Regardless of what magic potion he uses, he might wanna look at the trailer too... Also if this has a fuel water separarator, that will have to be cleaned/replaced...
