Advice for making gasket sticky

Tried to install a waterpump and ended up bending the gasket so a replacement is on the way.

I need to be able to use some adhesive to stick the gasket to the waterpump.
I have " Permatex 22071 " Waterpump gasket maker
AND
"Hylomar Universal Blue " Gasket & Jointing Compound

Both are advertised as being safe for use on waterpumps. Which is the best to use as an adhesive to stick the gasket to the waterpump ( to make installation easier ) ?

this is the waterpump, and the type of gasket I am installing.

All of the attachments are bolts? There are no studs threaded into the block?

There are threads in the engine block where I attach the pump to .

I just need to be able to stick the gasket onto the waterpump to make installation easier.

Yes. Generally there are a couple of the fasteners that are studs in the block, otherwise it’s difficult to align any of the holes. You typically slide the gasket onto those studs prior to installing the pump over the gasket. Those gasket glue products are most effective with a paper gasket not an embossed metal one.

What vehicle is this?

Sometimes I will use my own studs to help line up and install components. A wide headed Oldsmobile big block cast iron intake manifold weighs soooo much it's a life saver at installation.
Yep I’ve done that too on my BMW. The rear collector manifold between the engine banks was impossible to install otherwise. I got a couple of bolts at the hardware store and sawed off the heads.

I know how to install the waterpump. I just need to know which is best to stick the gasket to the waterpump as shown above.
It is a W203 Mercedes C240.

Sure. But there are no studs eh? How odd.

How about the homemade temporary stud idea? Online I see where people are using a couple of the shorter bolts loosely installed into the pump to align and hold the gasket as you install it. That should work.

You could use the 22071 without the gasket at all.

Or if the hylomar is the spray version, coat both sides of the gasket, let is sit for a bit and stick it to the pump.

You could also use a regular glue in a couple corners of the gasket

I know what you mean, I did try that initially but I had already bent the gasket by this point and it was difficult keeping the gasket in it's correct alignment with the bolts whilst trying to screw them in.

You're trying to hold it in place, right? A tiny drop of superglue will work.

Though, I've always wondered if hairspray could also work for this situation.

ive always just slid a couple bolts through the water pump and gaskets. Slowly guide the pump+gasket combo to its resting place and start the two bolts by hands. None of the stuff I work on has studs.

I second thr notion of a small dab of super glue. It sounds stupid at first, but a couple of very small drops should hold it in place and shouldn't interfere with sealing. I would think anyway

I believe that is a metal gasket? If so forget it and wait for the replacement.

I am waiting for the new gasket to arrive. But this time hoping to make the job easier and pop some adhesive onto the surface of the waterpump so the metal gasket sticks to it.
