How are these filters? Who is the manufacturer? I really like the design of the rough textured canister, but I am not sure of the filtering quality. I noticed that they are on a buy one get one sale at AAP.

I asked a similar question the last time they had this sale. I think they are very similar to a standard Purolator? Most stated they would be fine for normal 5K OCIs.

All the ones I cut open had a tiny bit less paper media than the regular Purolator Premium Plus. They are great oil filters for $1.50 each

They have construction identical to Purolator, with a possible difference being a little less filter media in the AAP filter.

I had one on my VW GTI 1.8T for roughly 7k miles. When I changed the oil a few weeks back, I cut open the AAP filter. There was nothing unusual to note. It looked like every Purolator I'd seen before, and it looked like it could have easily gone 2-3 times as long as I ran it.

Bottom line, IMHO, the AAP TG filters are very good. I wouldn't hesitate to use another one.

On the BOGO sale there's always a few that I stock up on for the lower mileage (usage) kiddie car pool. I just have so many vehicles with 3/4-16 threads in the extended fleet. Great value and the gripper stuff is awesome. I class them in the 3-5k sensible OCI.

Aside from the nitrile ADBV ..they'll last as long as most other filters. They're just not going to filter as good/fine. They should all have the OEM spec'd holding capacity.

I knew they were Purolator and I like them (especially @ 1.50 each

), but when recently at an Advance I asked the store manager who made them for Advance, and he was "positive they are made by Fram". His "evidence" was that on the box it is printed "Compare to Fram". Clueless!!

mira-

That's what you get for asking the manager...

They're definitely made by Purolator, and as mentioned before, are on par with the Premium Plus, with just a tad less filter media.

Funny -- I also saw in the ad that AAP is bragging that these "Compare to Fram". That would deter me from buying them if I didn't know better:)

I'm sure they're trying to capitalize on Fram's unearned reputation and market share. Many still subscribe to the Orange Can. They probably sell more being associated with Fram than they do with Purolator.

^^^what Gary Allan said^^^

Most marketing is directed to the least educated and most uninformed segments of the population, so it's not surprising that AAP thinks people will "compare to FRAM" favourably.

Yep, so many people love the orange wall of doom.

My mechanic, who is an excellent one will only use a fram filter on every vehicle he owns.

"Because he's been using them for 25 years" is his response..

Yep. And I bet he's never cut one open in those 25 years either.

I got a chuckle when one of my racer/wrench/engine builders customers was looking at his Fram H3 (or was it H4). I didn't even really "bash" the Fram. He's a bracket racer ..and he actually does quite well in his class. He may talk slow, but he's no dummy. I just pointed out the cardboard ..etc. I learned that you CAN'T convince anyone about anything with your conviction on that sorta thing, you sorta gotta let them figure it out on their own. I just said, "Oh, Wix/NAPA makes a racing filter ..it's the 5xxxxR ..and you can get them from fleetfilter.com".

Now this guy does cut open every filter on his race engine ..but just putting that notion in his head made him rethink the orange can.

I was at AAP yesterday, and read the following statement on the TotalGrip boxes:

This product was not manufactured by Honeywell Corporation, owner of Fram.

This is not exactly word for word, but basically what was on the back of the box.

I think the "compare to fram" is more due to the grippy end. Also why they stress on the box that they are NOT made by fram.... to avoid lawsuits.

I stopped by my local AAP and found that there is not a TotalGrip for my '06 Chevy that uses AC PF47. As common as that filter is, I was surprised. I couldn't find a cross reference to see if there was one for the oversized AC PF52.

I just used my last one of these from the January 2007 sale. I put it on my Jeep this morning. I love the grip of the can and since I'm still a 3 to 3.5K-mile changer, I feel like they're sufficient. Plus, on the Jeep, I can't hear any difference between starts with the nitrile ADBV compared to silicone. And $1.44/filter is as good of a deal as you'll find. I will likely buy 4 more of these this month and use them on the Jeep over the next year.

Another fella was nice enough to cut one apart as part of a "study" on filter construction. Click below and you can see for yourself how they're built.
