the engine has 45K on it, and used occasionally for towing or moving big things in the truck bed, definitely not a daily driver.

As other 460s (7.5L), it's known for burning oil, about 1qt/800-1000 miles.

No other problems.

Driven a few thousand per year.

The only additive I can recommend is a good, powerful fuel system cleaner.

Fuel Power or

Redline SI-1
Chevron Techron
Gumout Regane

Since purchasing my truck, I'd whipped the cooling and lubrication systems into shape, but had neglected the fuel system (for some reason?) which was in desperate need of attention.

I'm Currently about half-way through the first "cleaner" tank, and I've noticed a more smooth idle, reduced hesitation, no-more misfire when pulling from low rpms, and better acceleration...of course, my truck was bad to start off with, so your results may not be as "visible" as mine.

Has the truck always consumed this much oil? So you get a trail of blue smoke?

Which fuel system cleaner did you use? One that Jelly recommended? If the ring pack is gummed up (I suppose possible on occasional driven vehicle) certain cleaners should help.

I have used SI-1 and my truck runs better. Others have not helped. But I did not have your problem.

Also, if it were the ring pack, maybe AutoRx would help. If not blue smoking, maybe an oil with a higher flash point (or preferably lower NOACK volitility--may go together more or less). Better flash points come with type of oil and especially thicker oil.
