Additive recommends for April 2024

You’ve disassembled motors that have been run for significant amounts of time on oils with alkylated napthalenes & esters? There’s only a handful of oils that have them, and for many years it was limited to essentially a single oil from Mobil 1.
Back in the Tri Syn days we called it the Mobil 1 cleansing. Still to this day some of the cleanest high mileage engines I’ve seen. HPL and Amsoil SS are the modern day versions imo.

New here , yet have read many posts.

I see some posts about all additives as "snake oil"
I see some posts from years ago about formulas changing.

I ought a new Dodge Caravan (4 cyl) in 1998 and the dealer sold me an oil additive package. Has 170K on now and I have used BG EPR 109 and STP manifold cleaner on it. I put in Costco 5 W-30 synthetic oil

In 2017 I bought a new Kia Sorento (4 cyl) GDI and the manual indicates using a gas additive. Also the dealer used BG additives to clean out top end at 30 k and 50 k miles
The Kia dealer recently went to Petron Plus instead of BG.
The Kia had a recent unsuccessful piston soak that did not take care of the 2 qts per 1K miles (at 67K miles). I am in process of getting a new engine. I had constant 5k oil changes at dealer. I use top tier gas

How do I take care of this new engine? What "snake oil" do I use now.....Archoil 9100, Petron Plus, DT 550..??
I see many YouTubes of all sorts of additives but some/many are several years old
I see where Archoil even changed from zinc to Potassium Borate.
I know some will say just put in Amsoil or Pennzoil Ultra Platinum and nothing else. But this is a GDI monster.
Try new Valvoline Restore and Protect 5/30.
wait for at least 3-4 OCs to see if it reduces consumption. I just put it in my 2019 Sonata 2.4 with 23K mi on it at the time.

Thanks for the reply Ronn. Right after I saw that Motor oil geek video on YouTube, I bought two 5 qt jugs of it. ($30 each at Walmart) Had dealer put one in my 2017 Kia Sorento oil burner ( 2 qts/1k miles) . The other I will put in the Dodge. I just bore scoped #1 piston/cylinder to see how much carbon. Yesterday put Berryman 2616 fuel additive in gas tank. Soon will do oil change after EPR 109 flush. That is when I put VRP oil in. I will add Petron Plus oil conditioner to oil and watch to see if MPG goes up a little. Will update the results one of these days

A fuel additive will do zero for your top end in your 2017 GDI engine as the fuel never sees the intake system as it is injected directly in the cylinder. An induction cleaning will help clean your intake system and intake valves but you need a special kit to deliver it to the intake system..

Yeah. Had the KIA dealer do a BG top end clean at 30 and 50K miles. They just did a 3rd TSB 222 piston soak because of a foul up to KIA techline on #2. Hoping , a little for #3 to break the oil piston rings loose. Don't know whether to try Yamalube RF shock treatment or 505 CRO after. Unless KIA is a pain, I am supposed to get a new long block if piston soak #3 FAILS like the last two.

As for my 26 yr old Dodge Caravan 2.4L with 170K miles. I put in Berrymans 2616 fuel cleaner I scoped #1 cylinder for carbon, first. Thinking of doing 505 CRO or Yamalube RF shock on that one. ..if carbon is still mostly there. Then do a EPR 109 flush Then will fill with VRP. I am playing with this one because gas mileage is at 17. I have Petron Plus to put in after to see if MPG goes up some

Did you post pictures from the scope?
