Adding a network printer

Trying to add a HP LaserJet printer as network printer. I can ping the address successfully.

Windows does not find it so I try to add it manually. I enter the IP address but for drivers it only has Generic and Microsoft.

This is HP and I think I want to use the HP PCL V6 driver. But cannot get Windows to show that driver. I clicked Windows Update under printer drivers but did not help.

I should mention the printer is on a different VLAN but the laptop VLAN has access to printer VLAN since I can ping it.

Are you blocking any ports between VLANs? (TCP 9100 or 631 usually needs to get through for HP) Is the printer IP assigned via DHCP or static? Is mDNS allowed between VLANs?

I also changed my Windows from Public network to Private so Windows Network Discovery should work.

Can you install the HP PCL6 driver from their website and setup a port under Print Management as a TCP/IP device on that IP and setup the printer manually? Ive always found “discovery” of printers usually sets up a WSD printer that is marginal at best.

You have to download the drivers from the HP website. The windows update to find printer drivers is 99% useless.

You can download the installer or you can download the PCL6v4 by itself then go through the steps you did. Heads up, doing it your way with manually adding in the PCL6 driver will not put the PC on the printer's scan to pc screen, you will have to scan via windows fax and scan.

Connect the printer directly to your computer, then download and install the actual HP drivers. Once that's done, then set it up as a network printer.

I went into Unifi network management and told it to always assign a fixed address. So printer probably thinks it's DHCP but will always get same IP address.

local discovery usually wont cross vlans by design.

Via usb, the automatic windows printer search works great. With networked printers not so much unless you use a print server or they go through the same steps as you.

We do not want any devices on 192.168.1.1 VLAN to be able to access other devices on same VLAN. All they really need is to be able to do is go out to Internet.

Add printer manually, select whatever option there was to use custom port, create a tcp/ip port with the desired address, name it the same as the ip address for sanity purposes so you can identify it in the future, use that.

The main point is this is a WIFI at a church camp. Don't want one infected laptop to infect another. So not permitting devices on WIFI to talk to each other seemed like a good idea.

did you the printer setup wireless or LAN? in network connection settings you can set the network that individually connected devices don't see/share each other.

if you ask chatgpt or copilot exactly what you're looking to do 99% chance it will walk you thru the correct steps.
