Sis's 1998 Outback was getting to the point where you really wonder in what form that "the end" will manifest itself... and taking into consideration the massive amounts of salt that they use around here in a typical winter, you also wonder if it might be some sort of unibody or frame failure.
At 242,000 miles, "the end" manifested itself.
A failed water pump led to an overheated engine. Now, it is getting coolant in one of the cylinders. Not good.
So... today, we added another Subie to the family. Good used Subies for less than $10,000 are difficult to find around here, and when you find one, you'd better be fast.
This is a 2003 Outback with 77,000 miles. A Subaru with 77,000 miles is barely broken in. The smiling driver is Sis.
Now, I'll admit that I'm not a fan of the Timberline Green, but there's something about a Subaru Outback that allows it to pull it off nicely.
I also like how the nearly new beefy Firestone Affinity Touring tires do a good job of filling in the wheel wells as well. The rear windows are tinted, as well as the glass in the cargo area. Yet another bonus.
It also came with a envelope full of maintenance receipts in the glovebox.
The car was originally from Boulder, CO... which helps to explain the complete lack of typical Illinois rust on it.
One of the receipts was for a 72,000 mile service package at Merlin for $499. I'm sure that whatever it was, it wasn't worth $499.
Can anyone fill me in on what this 72,000 mile service package included? The receipt was really vague.
