We just added this 2020 MDX to our stable to replace our diesel BMW X5. It was one of the last 3rd-generation MDXes built (sold in September 2020) and has only about 33,000 miles. I'm going to use it for towing a camper trailer occasionally once I can get the transmission cooler installed.

It looks like Honda say 0w-20. I searched and couldn't find anything on this third-generation MDX (2014-2020) regarding filters. What are your thoughts? This engine is in a lot of other Hondas and Acuras but this is my first Honda I've ever owned and so I don't know if they're apples to apples with the same motor in the Accord, Odyssey, Pilot, and other Acuras.

Rockauto says these are the "Heavy Duty" options:

There's a long thread on Honda (Acura) oil filters. I think many would agree the current better filters on the market are Carquest Premium, Microgard Select, and Premium Guard EX. All have similar construction. I believe the Mobil -110A is also similar. Fram is out of business (First Brands). I know nothing about the Wix.

I recently bought a dozen Carquest Premium oil filters, part number 84356, for my 2025 Pilot.

Added: Since using for towing, I'd suggest seriously looking into using a higher viscosity oil, e.g. 5W-30. Just saying.

Wow alright! Don't know why I couldn't come up with this post in a search... must have been using the wrong terms... either way many thanks :)

⬆️100% agree. Any Premium Guard variation will serve you well.

I would definitely run a 5w30/40 unless you are in an extremely cold climate, then I would look for a 0w30/40. I've just started using Valvoline Restore and Protect 5w30 and will eventually switch everything over once the old oil inventory is used up.

For a filter I'm using Pentius PLXL7317 which is the same size as your Acura MDX. A similar alternative is available from brands such as MicroGard, CarQuest Premium. I personally would avoid any filter with a leaf-spring construction unless it uses a gasket (very hard to find). Some info here:

I'm currently running the Pentius PLXL7317 and have been since the Amsoil EA15K13 debacle. I bought a case of 12 off Amazon for ~$55. They then shot up to ~$72 and have since been unavailable. I'm going to use up the ten remaining Pentius filters on our daughter's two Hondas and start using the Carquest Premiums on mine.

I called Pentius a few months ago after the thread where someone had a Pentius filter blow out on them (later determined it hadn't been tightened properly). Pentius had not heard of any problems, so I directed the person to the BITOG thread, where he pulled it up and looked through it. Basically at that time, Pentius US was focusing on supplying filters to major lube centers and other high-volume sales.

I found a similar deal on Amazon and they've been gone ever since. Will keep an eye out for other sources of these filters as it's my current go-to for all applications if I can find it reasonable priced. Thanks for the info.

Thanks all!

Can't seem to find the Pentius filters for any kind of reasonable price... at least at this moment... The Premium Guard is only $5 on RockAuto, but anyone know why it says "various manufacturers?"

If you buy the Carquest Premium online from Advanced Auto Parts, they are offering a percentage off. Also, if you are a veteran, they have a 10% program for that. Buy a dozen and you'll not have worry about it for several years. I keep mine in a bedroom closet (proverbial cool, dark place).

I would go 5w30. The full synthetic Carquest Extended Protection filter comes out to around $8 if you add the oil bundle which I would get the Valvoline Restore and Protect 5 qt jug with that Carquest Extended Performance synthetic filter for $38 plus tax AND they deliver to your house FREE.

Thanks all!

Pentius supply has been scarce for quite a few months.. That 4612 PG model on RA is the short version of 7317/4610 size. The Various Mfg just means it might come with a PG sticker or a Pronto sticker or a Parts Plus sticker but it's the same filter.

Like others suggested, bump up the viscosity to 0W-30 or 5W-30. You want to protect the transmission with a cooler, but why not add some protection to the engine too.
