Acetone Vapor Polishing Headlights

I don't know how dangerous this stuff is. Heated coffee cups and acetone. What could possibly go wrong?

I thought about just wiping a damp cloth with acetone across my beater's headlight. You don't want acetone (or fumes) getting on anything you don't want to melt.

I replaced my headlights with the cheap Amazon knockoffs and I have the old oem headlights in a box in the garage. I’m tempted to try this…just because.

Might be good if ex smokers breathed in the fumes. For possible lung "reconditioning". Make them all shiny and new just like the headlights?

What's the point of this? First video doesn't show any prep. Other two show the sanding process which is pretty much the same for conventional techniques. Only difference is the finishing step. Not sure how that vapor can produce an even finish or one that will last more than a month compared to something like the 3M coating.

You can't argue with the results. Not zero risk but low risk IMO. I've done more dangerous things around the house and at work.

Might have to DIY this, heat acetone in microwave, rubber glove on cup for spout..... hold my beer and watch this.

I have seen something similar done but the youtuber just took a cloth wet with acetone and made a fast swipe across the lens, first top then bottom. He warned not to stop or rewipe the surface. It came out real nice but of course without some kind of UV protection you need to redo them every 6 mos.

I just use hydrogen peroxide bottle I bought from amazon, awesome results!

I used lacquer thinner straight out of the can and it removed the coating no problem. It also removed all vestiges of UV protection

I agree. First off, they're using a modified heated coffee mug. Most restaurants and home coffee makers heat coffee on the warming pot at or around 190 F. So it's not as if it's boiling furiously.

I think as far as prep, it's like painting. The more time sanding, the better, and more even, the finished job will turn out. If you were really concerned, you could get a couple of weather beaten lights from a boneyard, and practice on them as far as the degree of prep.

On my older F-150 I have plastic "chrome" trim around the lens itself. So I would be concerned about bubbling that off with the Acetone vapors. But I'm sure it's nothing that some careful masking would protect. For $15 bucks I think I'll get the kit.

I like your idea with the rubber glove. Or else a condom, (they're designed for "warm liquid"), and one of those tall shot glasses they drink Tequila from.
