As to opening the car door in front of ANY one,the one who does the door opening is completely at fault imo.

Oh! Stupid me.

Sorry...I didn't know you were referring to whyme's post!

My fault.

My horse comment was just a joke. I know most Texans have never even been on a horse. More likely a Harley these days.

The fun fact I still can't get is why he was soo close.

Ok maybe not doing 30 mph but at least 20. He would have likely hit my mirror based on his path. My insurance has an extremely high limit but I rather he not milk the whole pain & suffering route.

He is IMO as much as fault for this if not more than I am. It would be the same if I hit someone with my vehicle. I was parked, if you can't avoid a parked car I don't know what to say.

Also my windows are factory tinted so that might have been an issue as well. I was also at the end of a long line of parked cars.

Had he hit your mirror while parked, I'd agree, much the same as had a car hit your mirror.

However, once you open the door, it's likely you are at fault. This is true if a car or a bike hits your door.

Yup, see bicyclists breaking the laws all the time. Running red lights are very common. Should kick the bikes off the road, they are a nuisance and a hazard.

Hardly. Just another thing to watch out for.

You live in Portland and you have such disgust for bicyclists? Probably be better on your blood pressure to move or take transit. Portland has a love affair with bikes.

Yes, this city is willing to spend more money on trivial transportation upgrades like bike lanes instead of investing in something that will have an actual measured effect on the abysmal traffic situation. Instead of adding lanes to ease the horrible congestion they add another bike lane.

Same thing in Seattle.

I used to love bike riding...rode many miles. But it's not any sort of realistic solution to help traffic gridlock.

Better to spend the money on other things like more roads and efficient traffic lights.

The topic of bicycles and cars is a very touchy one for me. I grew up in the Phila area, specifically Northeast. We had a park near us that invested a good amount of money in creating bike lanes that wrapped around the whole park, literally for miles.

We has so many people that rode bikes it made sense since we had the room to create a nice place for people to ride safely.

The bicyclists that I now encounter since I moved to the suburbs are quite different. They take way too many risks considering the roads and the attention span of today's drivers.

I had a guy at 730am on a busy one lane road both ways almost cause an accident multiple times.

Also, since we have to share the road, you would think that someone on a bike should have to pay for insurance as well.

This is my thought as well. Wouldn't any vehicle that can legally use roads, lanes, traffic, etc have to have liability ins and state safety inspection just like motorcycles and cars? If not, wouldn't that open up the roads to include skateboarders, rollerbladers,Segway owners, kids on Big Wheels, and the list could go on and on.

Probably for the same reason we don't make anyone who buys shoes get insurance for fear they would walk in a road and cause an accident. I see plenty of people walking dogs in the road around here, maybe we should get require leash insurance too? To say nothing of basketball insurance, I've seen my fair share of balls in the road and it seems to be getting worse!

Always funny to see people begging for government regulation of even the simplest facets of life.

The bike lanes here are full of trash and broken bottles. Who could ride in them safely ?

Liability insurance isn't required for dogs, bicycles, or walking (yet) because these things are more likely to bear the largest ammount of damage while on a road. How many bike vs car accidents end up with the car driver being Med-Flighted ?

That said, you are responsible for any damage you cause if at fault. Dog runs in road and causes you to end up in a ditch, dog's owner is responsible for costs - in most cases.

And as a note regarding those walking - 2/3 of pedestrian vs car accidents - the pedestrian was too drunk to drive.

- I go back to lets all play nicely, so the rules don't get stupid.

The problem with bike riders is they think they have a right of way ! The idiots are too stupid to realize that they will most likely loose every fight they pick with a motor vehicle.

In some cases they do have the right of way by law. NY says they are equal in right and responsibility to other vehicles. It's the losing the fight aspect that makes folks defensive. Bicyclists and drivers both suffer from this. Each one thinks they're losing out, and then tempers flare.

I disagree that cyclists are stupid. I think they know too well the rules of fighting up a weight class. At least I do.

This is the problem for most operators be they bicyclists or drivers.

Most states have laws that give bicyclists rights to be on the road. You have to give ample clearance when passing them, etc.

Yet there are many drivers who do not give that, coming close to hitting the cyclist.

And on the other end, I see cyclists who ride the wrong way on one-way streets, run lights, etc.

It's not the mode of transport that makes someone a jerk. They were a jerk before they got on the bike or in their vehicle.

I have a bike that I ride, I have enough common sense to stick to low traffic areas and side roads, neighborhoods. I can't stand these riders who try to integrate with real traffic. Only a moron would fly past a line of parked cars, like this guy. Where I live we have endless idiots ridding on hilly, no shoulder, back roads with 45-50 mph speed limits. If you can't maintain the speed posted you are creating a hazard and have no business on the road. Then they throw the finger sometimes when you accelerate to get around them.

Rightly or wrongly, the majority of motorists in my neck of the woods generally just open their door into traffic without looking when they want to exit the car. Many do not hesitate to step right out before looking also.

Plenty of opportunity for bicycle riders not paying attention to have a crash. Even more dangerous is if a car is coming and the driver getting out of the car end ups getting hit by a car that is riding close to the parked car.

So which way do you want it ? Cyclists can't ride where cars are parked, nor on the back roads ? To go past the parked cars, they get forced into traffic. If a cyclist wants to put in 50 to 100 miles where is that supposed to happen, circling a development ? Where I live, that's not available, it is all back roads marked 45-50. Do you think cyclists choose these routes because they like the hazard ?

I don't see a good solution to this, short of patience and politeness from both sides.

Wheel
I do understand the need to compromise. I am just telling from my perspective that around my area, bicyclists are too trusting of auto drivers that they try and ride on roads that were clearly designed just for autos. No shoulder or bike lane at all.

In this situation, you have auto drivers who try and maintain enough room safely around the bicyclist, but are at this point crossing the double line into potential oncoming traffic.

The bike lanes you encounter may be cluttered with trash, but this is the safest solution for both parties.

I would never try to ride my bicycle on roads populated by cars today. Just too dangerous

The problem I have with bicyclists is many of them don't obey traffic laws...not stopping at stop signs, not signaling when they turn, etc...if these people get upended, that's their fault...

I've been placed in greater danger by other drivers than I have by bicyclists.

I'm a bicyclist, and I'd be the first to admit that there are jerks riding bikes. I see it every day.

However, I've been placed in danger far more often by someone in a car who is a jerk. People who run red lights in two ton+ vehicles are far more dangerous than those who do so on a 20# bicycle.

I would agree with the idea that we need to obey the law. There are far more motorists who are unable to follow the law and they are far more deadly than those on a bicycle.

I agree. Both sides should be following the rules of the road.

I've seen both sides do the wrong thing, but I am not a police officer, nor do I need to correct someone else. Being rude or endangering a cyclist or driver because the last one you saw was a jerk just isn't right. There's no reason for it.
