Acceptable Oil Consumption on GM HD vehicles

Hear is a bulletin that goes back to 2000 but was updated in 2020. It’s GM’s opinion that acceptable oil consumption on vehicles of 8600 GVW and up is 1 quart per 100 gallons of fuel. This is the first time I noticed this bulletin. I find it is a moot point as my 6.0 in my 3/4 ton does not consume oil, but perhaps others do. What do you think about the issue?

It's too bad the GM dealers don't show you this report just before, you sign the purchase agreement. My wife's 2011 equinox burned oil at a rate of 1 qt every 750 miles. We bought it from my sister with 35k miles on it. Gm sent us a letter saying to bring it to a dealer for them to look at, their response was to do nothing about it. Even tho it was strictly maintained by a chevy dealer right up to the point we bought it. I'll never by a gm product again. I went rogue and thru the dexos "advisement" out the window, and use my own mixture of various wt oils to get the consumption level down to a reasonable amount. It seems vehicle manufacturers have concentrated on how many tech gizmos they can upsell the customer, and forgot how to build a motor that runs properly. How does "engineered oil burning" not increase the amount of pollution emitted by a vehicle?.,,,

gm "supposedly" has fixed their consumption issues but this is goofy motors we're talking about so I'm gonna check the level on my 21 escalade and i'll lemon law it without hesitation.

My 2005 with 312k since vie had it new burns a quart every 3800ish miles. GM really doesn't make them like they used to. And i used to use the cheapest **** oil and filters too and still came out well. Even used mostly 5w-20 for the first 80k because i heard it gave better mpg and i didn't care about longevity.

What's the cause? poor sealing rings? I always thought new vehicles would have very tight clearances.

My 02 used no make up oil, my 2019 does not either. The 6.0 isn't a big oil burner. Not even a complaint on any of the GM sites I frequent.
I tow pretty regularly at about 8000lbs with both trucks.

Lets say I average 14 MPG with a 36 gallon tank. That is a quart about every 1400 miles. I don't find that to be unacceptable. Tons of car companies allow for 1 quart every 1000 miles. Honda, Hyundai, and Toyota come to mind for some cars.

What's the cause? poor sealing rings? I always thought new vehicles would have very tight clearances.

If you have any of these engines and if they use oil it is most like related to PVC and not the rings.

It is funny they just list it as gasoline engine. They made the 8.1 until 2007.

girlfriends bought new 13 2.5 malibu was using over a qt in a thou by 6x,xxx miles in 2018 warranty is gone so is the POS GM product!!!

It is such a weird TSB. They don't include the 1500HD which has the same drivetrain as the gas 2500/3500HD 6.0.

Why would they show you a service bulletin relating to HD trucks with big V8s when you're buying a small SUV with a 4L? Was it burning oil at 35k when you bought it?

sounds like a PPD to me... I hate vehicles that consume oil. None in my current fleet need any make up oil between OCI's. That being said they are all Chrysler vehicles, not GM's.

The original 2500 and 1500Hd are 8600 gross. The 2500hd is 9200 and up depending on year.

You bet. Here are some interesting factoids on 1500 HD’s in general.

It was an interesting truck. It had a 9.5 inch semi floater rear, while the 6.0 gas 2500HD/3500HD had the full floater 10.5 inch rear. The 8.1 and Diesel had 11.5 inch full floater. The 2500 was the same but early ones could have a 5.3. The 2500 came in single, extra and crew cab. The 1500HD only came in crew cab.My BIL has a 1999 GMC 2500. The frame was different from my old 02 2500HD.

The 1500HD is identical to a 2500LD, It's the Crew Cab that killed the Payload & GCWR. All "GMT800" 2500LD trucks came in a Single Cab/Long Box or Extended Cab/Short Box configuration & All 1500HD trucks came in a Crew Cab/Short Box configuration.

You sure a 2500LD came in a Crew Cab.....I've only seen 1 or 2 be Extended Cab.
