I have owned this van for 8 years now and finally decided to ask about it here. The AC has worked and still works great the 8 years I've owned it but when I purchased it I always noticed I would here the AC make a hissing sound for a few seconds after I turn it on which you would normally think is indicative of a leak. But 8 years of this and it always works great. Would anyone have an idea why it would do this?

My old trucks have always done it but it's never loud but when the systems are fully charged it's almost unnoticeable but if a bit low it's a little bit louder but if the radio is on I won't hear it. I believe it's just some gas moving through the evaporator lines before the compressor fully pressurizes and starts to move liquid and the dash not insulating sound that great. Original compressors, evaporators, accumulators fans, and condensers so clearly it's not an issue at least for these old gm's. Some dashboards have better sound insulation like my escalade so I can't hear it.

There's no vacuum actuation in these. The hiss you hear (probably behind the glove box area) is most likely the expansion valve. If the hiss is brief it's quite normal. My 2005 and 2014 have done this periodically since new.
