This is an AC Delco PF457GF. Note it is one I bought from the dealer I work for and they buy them in bulk packs so they come in a sealed plastic bag not a box, and they are US made and are not the Hengst filters like some of the Delco's are for this application.
Cost with my employee discount was around $4.
This filter was on my "new" 03 Cavalier. The engine has around 180k miles. I got this as a basket case project and the engine was out of another car and I installed a new timing and balance shaft chain set while the engine was out of the car, along with a new clutch.
I noticed the engine had some deposits under the valve cover and timing cover.
The engine runs very well, no smoke or odd noises.
I decided to do a very short oil change to remove any deposits that were disturbed from my work. This is probably 3-4 hours run time running in my garage and driveway at various rpm.

Looks like the filter is trapping a lot of carbon/sludge. I would repeat the process a couple more times. Have to wonder if this debris is building up on the pump pickup screen.
Nice post.

Nice post.

Yes, that is the plan. Car is not currently on the road, plan on putting on the road in April or May, it will be replacing my Saturn that the undercarriage is getting rotted out.
When the Cavalier is on the road I will probably change the oil again after 1000-1500 miles.

When this engine was on my engine stand, I put some MMO in the cylinders as lube to prevent cylinder rust. I'm wondering it that could have softened up some carbon that was in the oil rings?

I actually left the oil plug out and poured a couple quarts of cheap oil in to flush out any crud that broke free when I did my timing chain work.

My plan is a couple short changes with conventional (Valvoline conventional is what the last oil was and also what is currently in).
Then a change with a cheaper off the shelf synthetic, then finally switching to Amsoil.

Very interesting. There seems to be two design of this filter. The one you pictured has has a different plastic housing both on top and bottom. The non bulk AC Delco is made by Hengst and the construction is totally different.

Filters designed like the one in your picture makes my engine rattle like an S.O.B. on startup. And its been like that since day one. Thanks for the pictures,

I got the 'non-F' 457G at the parts house and it id doing well on my 2.2 Ecotec. I think it is at 37% remaining with semi-synthetic with 5-6k on the current fill.

I think it was double what you got it for. It looks well constructed and I do believe it is a Hengst. I don't noticed a difference between it and the one you posted like stower17 said We should. But it was my first cartridge ever. I forgot what I pulled, but it was from Firestone. Also, I have a Puro classic I got too and a gasket/seal was included with it (but not with the 457G) but they say they last a while anyway.

Question for you cronk. Since they are not in individual boxes, how do ya'll techs (or mechs- I dont know which you prefer) know which filter goes in which car?
